  • Family-friendly site in Chittering, a 20-minute drive from Cambridge
  • A 10-minute drive to Wicken Fen Nature Reserve
  • Vegetable prep room with fridge and microwave; barbecues allowed
City sights by day but prefer calmer surrounds by night… that's the mighty tempting combo on offer at the family-run Chittering Park, in the Cambridgeshire village of Chittering. This family-friendly place (which also welcomes four-pawed family members) is a great spot for exploring Cambridge – the city is a measly 20-minute drive away, although it's an even better plan to leave the car behind and take the bus from the stop at the site entrance. For days revolving around the rural surrounds, there are some lovely walks in the area (that’ll keep the dog happy), with plenty of riverbanks and lakes to explore… or fish in, if that’s your thing. When thoughts turn to food, it’s easy enough to throw some meals together at base. There’s a vegetable prep room with a fridge and microwave, and barbecues are permitted to serve up some grilled accompaniments. There’s also a washing-up area to deal with any mess from all such proceedings. Think you deserve a night off from chores? Leave the cooking (and washing up) to someone else and instead opt for pub grub in the village – there are a couple of decent pubs and other eating spots in nearby Waterbeach (less than 10 minutes’ drive). It’s also possible to order takeaways to the site, for the ultimate in lazy eats. As for facilities, there are two male and two female washrooms here, each with a hot shower, toilet and sink.

Liked: Very friendly staff and permanent residents of the park. Couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful. Facilities were spotless even though they were getting older. New shower and toilet block was almost complete and looks lovely.

Disliked: Road was a little noisy

Liked: Family run site - very friendly. Nice level pitch. Very helpful owner who gave us a lift to the Park and Ride after the local bus was cancelled. The toilets and shower block were very old but clean and functional. A new block is under construction so that should make a big improvement.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Shower facilities and great for a last minute booking

Disliked: Noisy road and static caravan resident shouting at my wife for playing with our puppy (guide dog in training)!! So I’d question whether it’s dog friendly or not

Local attractions

While nosing around Cambridge (20-minute drive), look out for the gorgeous colleges and gardens, the arts and antiquities at Fitzwilliam Museum and the Round Church, which is one of only four round medieval churches in England. Days spent punting on the River Cam are a fine choice, too. When it’s time to move onto the next city, make it Ely (15-minute drive). Its pretty cathedral, Oliver Cromwell’s House and Stained Glass Museum are all worthy of a peek. If you haven’t got your fill of architecture yet, consider a visit to the impressive Anglesey Abbey (15 minutes), which has a whopping 98 acres of landscaped grounds to stroll; or Wimpole Estate (25 minutes), where there’s a mansion, parkland and gardens, as well as farm animals to meet. Speaking of farms, the Farmland Museum at Denny Abbey is just down the road from the site (25-minute walk or a few minutes’ drive). And there’s more by way of museums in Duxford, with a collection of aircraft – including Concorde – at the Imperial War Museum (half an hour). Don’t leave without a visit to Wicken Fen Nature Reserve (10-minute drive) – it is the National Trust's oldest nature reserve, after all, with dog-friendly walks, cycle routes and wildlife to spot.
