Go on, tick Birmingham off your bucket list or get re-acquainted with the red-brick city… and at the same time, stay in a miniature wildlife haven where it’s possible to watch out for wildlife. On the outskirts of Birmingham, Tropical Garden Oasis is a lush tropical garden under six miles from the city centre. This is a small but diverse space with various natural pond features, patios and dining and seating areas. You’d never guess you were in the city, with tropical plants and the wildlife that are attracted to the plants. That’s why this is such a popular spot for nature watchers and people from all walks of life looking for an outdoor experience in the West Midlands' big smoke. So, relax and peacefully observe the water features and wildlife. At night, solar-powered lighting adds to the relaxed atmosphere. The owners say it's at its best during the late spring and summer, but it’s bound to be a fabulous retreat year-round. Plus, barbecues and firepits are kindly welcome on site and there’s a small shop five minutes’ walk from the site. When you’re ready to get out and seize Birmingham’s attractions by the horns (in the spirit of the Bull statue outside of the huge Bullring shopping centre, 20 minutes’ drive away), there are plenty a short drive away. Check out the chocolate story in Bournville’s Cadbury World (half an hour), catch an event at the National Exhibition Centre (15 minutes) or learn more about the Birmingham gangs that inspired the Peaky Blinders TV series at the Black Country Living Museum (half an hour).

Local attractions

There’s plenty of plant life on the site, but those of you still wanting more can head to The Birmingham Botanical Gardens (20 minutes’ drive) for glasshouses and an outdoor theatre in the summer. The National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham (20 minutes) takes things underwater instead; expect to see turtles, stingrays and sharks. If you’re looking to get a taste of the nightlife scene, Birmingham’s golden mile is on Broad St (15 minutes). The Custard Factory (15 minutes) is Digbeth’s independent and alternative venue; it has shops, bars and an independent cinema showing select films and classics. Perhaps you’d like to put your muscles and endurance to the test too. The Bear Grylls Adventure (20 minutes) has an obstacle course inspired by the Royal Marines, as well as activities like shark diving and cage snorkelling. For something a little less strenuous, there’s an aqua park only a short drive away at Inflata Nation Inflatable Theme Park Birmingham (five minutes) and theme park rides at Drayton Manor Theme Park (half an hour).
