  • Warwick Castle and Royal Leamington Spa within 15 minutes' drive
  • Fishing on site (for an extra charge); farm shop/café a mile away
There are many reasons why one might fancy settling down by a river – perhaps for the fishing, the views, the wildlife… maybe even the chance to get in the water. Happily, all of the above are on the cards at Avon Wild Camping, a peaceful Warwickshire site on the banks of the River Avon 15 minutes' drive from Leamington Spa. There’s a mighty pretty stretch of the river running alongside one side of this site, making it a prime spot for kids to paddle and catch minnows in the shallows (under supervision, of course) or for grownups to pick up permits (available on site for an extra charge) to try their luck with the chub, pike, grayling, roach and brown trout that swim in the waters. It’s a popular part of the world with wildlife too, so settling down by the river with binoculars and/or a drink also comes highly recommended. All is very laidback around here: it’s a pick-your-own pitch place, with heaps of space to choose from around the 12 acres of meadow. Being a back to basics site there are no electric hookups or showers, but there is access to limited (but clean) toilet facilities. As this is an eco site, the toilets run on rain water, guests are strongly encouraged to recycle and, without wifi, the kids are free to focus on playing by the river. Alfresco meals can be cooked up at the campfire area; there are firepits and kiln-dried timber available if you need them. Pick up supplies for such things at the farm shop a mile away; it’s also got a café for coffee, cakes, pizzas and other meals if you’d rather eat out. There are several good country pubs nearby too, or you could scoot into Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes’ drive) for more places to eat and drink.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Really beautiful campsite right next to the river. Was lovely and quiet with much needed protection from the wind during our stay with the bushes and trees on the site. The owners were wonderful and we really enjoyed the use of the fire-pit to wind down in the evenings. Both the dogs loved playing in the river, wish it was warmer so we could have gone in with them! Definitely would recommend and would for sure visit again in the future.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: WC‘s are clean, site is flat and we had ample space to ourselves. I think in the middle of the season it will become a bit cramped, but we will gladly return just before or at the end of summer.

Disliked: The fire wood advertised are merely bags of cut up pallet wood. Not suitable to use for a BBQ due to fumes and burns out very quickly. If you like a good fire, take plenty of your own wood.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Found site easily from text received, pitched next to our daughters tent by the river; site got busier on Saturday but field is spacious enough so that everyone could have privacy and peace; we were initially concerned about what the facilities would be like as we had no idea what a compost toilet was but the toilets were clean, flushable and individually decorated; there are no facilities to shower, dispose of rubbish or chemical toilets but this was made very clear before we arrived so not a problem at all; very relaxing weekend, enjoyed our bbq and sitting around our fire eating toasted marshmallows, no strict rules about where to pitch etc and children on the site were free to run around and have fun whilst not causing any disturbance to others - highly recommend for a relaxing wild camp 😊

Disliked: The only problem we encountered was the washing up area - it had no light and the water was a dribble and cold but we worked around that by boiling our own water and washing up at our pitch so not a huge problem.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Friendly and ‘take us as you find us’ kind of site. Loved the stream and did a bit of fishing, nice way to while away the time. Did the walk to & from Bubbenhall on the Coventry way path, couple of pubs there to enjoy one doing nice food.

Disliked: I didn’t dislike anything, I wish the gate was set back when you get to the site, parking on the road to open the gate was a bit hair-raising. A bridge over the stream to get on the path would be good so you didn’t have to go on the road would be a good idea.

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay at Avon Wild Camping. It was our children’s first camping experience. They loved it and can’t wait to go back. The lady Polly running the site was really friendly and welcoming. The toilet blocks were kept clean. Everyone we came across were very friendly and meet some regular goers. You can hire fire pits and wood which is an easy and painless process and got our deposit back the next morning no problems at all. This is a very relaxed camping site where you can just choose your own pitch and do your own thing. There was a football table and table tennis on site as well as rope swings over the river which as you can imagine the children loved! Overall we had a really lovely experience and look forward to being able to book again!

Local attractions

The big draw around here is Warwick Castle (15 minutes’ drive) – it’s well worth a proper day out to explore the dungeons, take in the shows, get lost in the maze, see the birds of prey flying, wander through the 64 acres of the estate… oh, and visit the castle itself, of course. For something just a little less expansive, head instead to Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden (15 minutes) or stroll around the pretty Jephson Gardens in Royal Leamington Spa (10 minutes). Coventry (15 minutes) and Stratford-upon-Avon (25 minutes) are other good options for urban days out; try Ryton Pools Country Park (five minutes) or Stoneleigh Deer Golf Club (over the road) if you’d rather stay rural. If you need family days out, take bouncy kids over to the Jump In trampoline park (15 minutes), or get set for farm-based fun among the animals, play areas, funfair rides and escape rooms at Hatton Adventure World (25 minutes).
