  • Small-scale Shropshire site in the small village of Walcot
  • A 15-minute drive from Telford and Shrewsbury
  • Laidback site, with dogs, barbecues and campfires allowed
When touring in Shropshire, there are a few places you've got to tick off along the way – Ironbridge Gorge, the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Shrewsbury, the county town, are all sure to be on the list. That's where Wrekin View Retreat comes in – this smashing little spot is within easy reach of all the local sights and, as its name suggests, is just a short distance from The Wrekin, an impressive hill a few minutes' drive from base that makes a great hike. This spot is very quiet, hosting just a handful of guests at any one time. With private access, secure grounds and a peaceful environment, it makes an appealing proposition for those that like their holidays on the low-key side. It's very laidback too, with dogs, barbecues and campfires all allowed (just use your common sense and follow all instructions from site staff). The facilities here are simple but well-maintained, with toilets, a wash basin and a well-maintained rustic shower for guests who haven't brought their own amenities. Please note that the only waste disposal available is for dog waste – please take all litter home with you. Wrekin View Retreat is in the small village of Walcot, just a few minutes' walk from a local pub and a short pedal from scenic National Cycle Route 81.

Weir View electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: A lovely place to stay with beautiful views all around. Kate was a great host, she was very friendly and made the whole process from booking to leaving so easy and pleasant. We loved the quiet and idyllic grounds and surroundings. We were greeted by their friendly cat and even got to see a peacock the next morning as he was strolling around the courtyard. The facilities are just what you need, clean and accommodating. Perfect for a short stay.

Weir View electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Beautiful site, very peaceful, lovely host who was extremely helpful and friendly! Wish we had a chance to explore the area a bit more as it was gorgeous (just very, very wet!) Booked as we wanted an adults only, relaxed, dog friendly space, with the ability to have a camp fire. It certainly delivered on all counts.

Disliked: The weather was awful so was limited things to do within walking distance, so make sure you take all food/drinks/supplies.

From the manager: Hiya Nick thanks for your lovely review and also reminding future campers to go to the shop on the way 😄. Every camper receivs a whatsap with details on how to find us including a note to say make sure you get provisions if stopping on site as nearest shop is 3 miles away. It's a great reminder. Kate x

Weir View electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Nice new gravel drive to park on, sheltered by the Stables, with a lovely view (and sound) of the Weir bellow. Great, informative and genuinely friendly communication. Genuinely rustic facilities (first time I’ve ever showered in a stable stall!), but that just added to the charm 😎

From the manager: Thanks David, was lovely to meet you and great that it was Mother's Day and your family could visit and see you. And yes you loved the shower with the horse next door 😀😀 neighhhhhhhhhh. Welcome anytime. Kate

Weir View electric gravel motorhome pitch

Liked: Great stay at Wrekin View retreat. Communication prior to arriving was excellent with great directions and information. We were the only people staying the night so had choice of 2 pitches as the grass pitches were not in use due to it being winter. Owners so friendly and welcoming, even though we arrived as Wolves were playing! View of the Wreckin from the pitch was fantastic, and watching the sun rise behind it was superb. Level pitches, didn't even need power lead as on site ones reached the van. So quiet and peaceful, and the shower is something to be seen and experienced. WIFI signal excellent too.

From the manager: Thank you Stephen was great to have you both here. And the wolves won 🥳🥳🥳 welcome back anytime and thank you for a lovely review. Kate

Local attractions

The Wrekin can be seen from all around here and can be reached by car in about 10 minutes. There are paths up both sides of the hill, with one that's gentler on the knees and another rougher route for those that appreciate a good challenge. There are plenty more climbs, rambles and cycle rides on offer if you head 20 minutes or so to the south to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – Church Stretton (30 minutes) is always a good place to start. To the east is Telford (15 minutes) and Ironbridge (20 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a proud industrial past. As well as the Iron Bridge itself, this scenic stretch of the Severn is home to sights as varied as Buildwas Abbey (20 minutes), museums dedicated to tiles and china (20 minutes) and Benthall Hall (25 minutes), a National Trust property. In the other direction, you have Shrewsbury town centre (15 minutes), where boat trips, history walks and independent shops are on offer. Alternatively, on the outskirts of town there are historic sites like Wroxeter Roman City (10 minutes), Attingham Park (10 minutes), a stately home with gorgeous grounds, and Haughmond Abbey (15 minutes).
