  • Peaceful Shropshire site with views over forests and hills
  • A five-minute drive from Church Stretton; half an hour from Ludlow
  • Equestrian services for horse owners; five minutes' walk to a pub
If you’re a fan of waking up to splendid rural views and spending time in the local area hiking in the hills, wild swimming or looking around old fortresses, Barn Field Farm Camping will sound like a real treat. This small and family-run site is up in Shropshire's Stretton Hills and has the views to prove it – settle down for a stay here if you fancy waking up to green vistas of tree-covered hills… It's also handily located close to plenty of local amenities: the nearest pub is a five-minute walk away, while the shops and cafés of All Stretton village centre are a breezy 10 minutes away. Kids, dogs and horses (that's right, horses) are welcome at Barn Field Farm Camping; Chris, the guy who owns this place, is a renowned horse whisperer, so do get in touch for a natter about all things equine. These hills are best admired in the saddle (whether that's on two wheels or on horseback) or on foot, so make sure you come along with a plan to explore the surrounds. With no electric on site, firepits are available to hire for your barbecues and there's a washing-up area that makes dealing with the aftermath a doddle. If you fancy leaving the cooking to someone else for the night, ring up a takeaway or stroll into All Stretton for a sit-down meal.

Granny’s Patch non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Spacious camping field Level (ish) pitches Good views Good location, nice pub 5 mins walk. Lots of walks close by.

Disliked: Barn field farm has the potential to be a really nice site if the owners spent a little time and small amount of money. Toilets and showers basic but OK, showers are hot. No lights in some so couldn't use showers in the evening. Had to use the loo using torch on my phone! The site needs tidying up. There is lots of the owners junk lying around by the shower area, old camping equipment, old furniture, sinks etc. It doesn't make customers feel valued if the owners are happy to take our money but aren't prepared to make the place look reasonable. It doesn't cost a penny to move rubbish out of view of paying customers. Bins were overflowing by the end of our second day, a few household wheelie bins aren't sufficient for a busy bank holiday weekend.

Liked: Location - Close to Church Stretton, Carding Mill valley and the Long Mynd. There is a pub within a 5-10 minute walk frim the site. Stunning views of the surrounding hills. Play area for children at the site entrance. Got a 5G phone signal on the site, which was a pleasant suprise given the rural location.

Disliked: Railway line close by - gets a bit noisy when a train passes. There is also a bit of noise from the nearby A49, especially when HGVs are passing.

Granny’s Patch non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful location. Very near to Church Stretton, Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd. Lots of space on site, I could be away from other campers (even on a summer holiday weekend). Friendly hosts. The toilets and showers were clean and there was no wait to use them while I was there (there are 3).

Disliked: Directions to the correct field were a little confusing- 3 of us staying at the site had to move our tents. My tent was near the train track which was loud, next time I would stay on the other side of the field (potentially a little quieter). A bit expensive for what it is.

Liked: The views, great location, plenty of space

Disliked: Showers were slightly temperamental but nothing we couldn’t deal with. The Trainline didn’t bother us on our first night but the second night it sounded like there was works going on it was very loud.

Granny’s Patch non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Simple but great pitch. Basic toilet and shower area but don’t need much more when camping. 5 mins drive to the local village and a cute little play area at the entrance of the camp site.

Disliked: Some slight unlevelled pitches & close to a rain line.

Local attractions

Those days where you’d rather not go too far will be well-spent in Church Stretton, either nosing around the Church Stretton town centre (five minutes' drive) or doing some good shooting on the golf course at the Church Stretton Golf Club (five minutes' drive/20 minutes' walk). If exploring out over lush landscapes and getting your blood pumping sounds like an excellent way to begin your holiday, the reward at the end of your hike in the Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (10 minutes) could be a wild dip in the reservoir. Getting to know a little of the past life around here might also pique your interest. If so, the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm (10 minutes) recreates 19th-century farm life with working heavy horses and historic house tours. Charles Dawin's Birthplace (30 minutes) is another interesting visit, of course. If that’s not enough history, Ludlow Castle (30 minutes) and Powis Castle and Garden (45 minutes) both provide a glimpse at medieval life. Led by a falconer, the experiences at Battlefield Falconry Centre (25 minutes) will also let you try bird handling or accompany a hawk on a journey through the trees.
