  • Luxurious glamping tents with 360-degree views of the Shropshire Hills
  • A 15-minute drive to Carding Mill Valley; 40 minutes’ drive to Ludlow
  • Well-kitted out bell tents with walks from site; pubs and shops nearby
Fancy a luxurious glamping break in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with myriad walks and cycle routes all around you? Alderwood Glamping might just be the spot you’re looking for. With fabulous rural views all around, the site is a 10-minute walk from escarpment trails leadig into Carding Mill Valley and 15 minutes’ drive from the Ragleth Hill Circular route. This is a small site with just a few bell tents three fields away from gravelled car parking. In good weather, you can drive down to the neighbouring field, but otherwise the owners are on hand to help you transport luggage to and fro. Creatively kitted out with picnic tables, handmade beds and boho bed linens, the tents are comfy, welcoming retreats with storage space, chairs and cosy blankets for an unforgettable stay – just the thing for romantic breaks under the star or families wanting a countryside catch up. The cute decor is prettied up with bunting – by night fairy lights sparkle and there’s a wood-burning stove to keep you all toasty. And although it’s an off-grid spot, soothing hot showers (great after a day yomping across Shropshire hills), toilets and cooking facilities are at your disposal. Cardington village (five minutes’ drive) is home to a traditional pub, while Church Stretton (15 minutes) is the place for handy stores and a choice of takeaways. The gorgeous towns of Shrewsbury and Ludlow (both 40 minutes) make smashing day trips for a potter around medieval castles and quirky museums.

Liked: We absolutely loved our stay at Alderwood Glamping, so much so that whilst there we asked if it was possible to add another night onto our stay! The site is perfect, so picturesque and tranquil - you literally have everything you need to enjoy a relaxing break in the countryside; just take some food & drink and you're good to go. There are only 4 bell tents on the whole site! The facilities include a composting toilet and HOT (yes hot) shower which you share between 2 tents (yours & another) and they are cleaned & emptied daily. There are also washing up facilities, drinking water - which is also topped up daily, a gas camping stove, outdoor fire pit/bbq and indoor log burner. As soon as you arrive you just feel at ease - one because you look into your tent and see the cosy double bed all made up (by the way was really comfy to sleep on) and also because Jill made us feel so welcome. Nothing was ever too much trouble when we asked - the whole experience was just perfect. It is off grid, but there are USB power packs charged up ready to go if you need to charge your phone etc, also supplied by the hosts; they really have thought of everything. Even down to the little added touches of the pretty fairy light in & outside the tent! There is also a fridge freezer at the entrance to the site, before you drive down to the tent location, where you can pop food & drink in and even borrow a cool box and ice packs! Fresh eggs and firewood are also available to purchase for a very reasonable price too. I could write so much more about this beautiful hidden gem (that I really want to tell everyone about but also don’t want to because it's so special). We can't wait to go back next year!

Disliked: Having to leave!

Liked: If you wanna be in a campsite without interference of phone signal and overcrowded with too many tents, so that you can focus on reconnecting with family; or if you wanna stretch your legs and go hiking, do yoga, or play ball games and follow with a hot shower, this is the place you are looking for.

Bell tent

Liked: Everything was absolutely perfect. We had 2 of the bell tents with friends. The owners are wonderful and happily let our kids feed the lambs a bottle of milk and feed the goats. Tents were perfect, location is absolutely stunning. Will definitely come back. My daughter (11) called it the ‘best campsite ever!’

Liked: The tent was well set out, clean and tidy. Everything you needed was available, gas for the burner, wood for the log burner and logs for the out door camp fire. Hosts were excellent. Local attractions

Outdoor types can head off into the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty direct from the site, for numerous walks and cycling routes from easy to challenging. Expert mountain bikers test their nerve and skills on steep courses at Shropshire Hills Mountain Bike and Outdoor Pursuit Centre, or for a more sedate day out play a game of golf (both 20 minutes’ drive) or saunter up Ragleth Hill (15 minutes) for 360-degree panoramas. Mix in a bit of history with all these outdoor activities: discover Stokesay Castle, a fortified medieval manor surrounded by a moat, on a free audio tour. There are more magnificent Shropshire Hills AONB views from the spindly, hilltop Flounders’ Folly (both 25 minutes), and interpretive signs at Clun Castle (40 minutes) teach you all about this former border-defence fortification slowly crumbling into ruins. You’ve also got a brace of delightful market towns to explore. Ludlow is packed with half-timbered buildings, indie shops and romantic pubs for cosy lunches, all overlooked by an 11th-century castle open for touring. Shrewsbury (both 40 minutes) has a charming mixture of half-timbered and Georgian architecture, plus walks along the River Severn, a rose-pink castle and a soaring medieval abbey.
