Heading to the Henley Royal Regatta and hoping not to spend too many boatloads of your hard earned cash? Pack up a motorhome or campervan and roll along to Oxfordshire's Regatta Riverside Motorhome Park, a pop-up site at Temple Island Meadows. Setting up shop here is a splendid idea, and not just for financial reasons: the park is right by the river and close to the start of the races, meaning you can sleep in and still get in among the action with very little faff. You could catch all the regatta action right there by your pitch if you wished, although it’s recommended that you wander up to the main hub from time to time – there are bars and food outlets up here, and live music all week. Saturday’s the big day at the popular Barn Bar, and as something of a bonus, guests at the site will be given two tickets to get in there and join the party (which runs from 1pm through till midnight with live music all day). If you need further supplies, your location means it’s easy to stroll into town along the Thames towpath – it’s usually about a half-hour walk but that may depend on how many revellers are about at the same time...

Route directions

Please do check your route as Henley Royal Regatta has a traffic order in place throughout the event. This means there is a one-way system in place along Remenham Church Lane and Remenham Lane which reverses at 4pm. Entry to Temple Island Meadows is via Remenham Church Lane off White Hill/A4130 (at the top of the hill) until 4pm, after which time it is via Remenham Lane (tuning off White Hill/A4130 at the Little Angel pub). Please therefore follow the one-way system to your gate and only use satnav directions until you reach White Hill/A4130, after which you should follow the sign posts to the relevant gate.

Local attractions

If the sight of all those finely toned bods rowing up and down the river gets a bit much, take to the towpath and head away from Henley for a quieter ramble, perhaps to one of the country pubs in Hurley or Medmenham – or all the way to the famed Hand & Flowers pub in Marlow; it'll take a couple of hours but a Michelin-starred meal is your virtuous reward at the end. Or perhaps all the action has inspired you to start getting a bit more active? There are three golf courses within a 15-minute drive if you’d like to ease yourself in gently, and Bracknell Ski Centre is 35 minutes away if you’re more of a daredevil downhill type. Several of Henley’s neighbours make for handsome wanders too – Windsor (35 minutes) must be top pick for anyone who wants to put the royal into their Royal Regatta experience, and the fancy colleges of Oxford are about 45 minutes away. The National Trust’s Greys Court is 10 minutes away if you’d like to get a classic country pile on the schedule.
