  • Luxury shepherd’s huts in the countryside just outside the Cotswolds
  • A five-minute drive from Burford; 25 minutes from Chipping Norton
  • Private outdoor area with a woodfired hot tub and firepit
Bespoke shepherd’s huts in the countryside on the edge of Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? If that’s a ‘yes’ from you, make your way to the adults-only (but dog-friendly) Westwell Downs, located on a family farm a five-minute drive from Burford. Surrounded by miles of walking and cycling trails, and a 10-minute drive from Cotswolds attractions, this is an excellent base indeed. The sleeping areas have a kingsize bed made up with British bed linen and woollen throws, and there’s a separate living area looking over the paddock (a top sunset spot). Cooking is easy too, given that there’s a well-equipped kitchen area with a hob and combi oven. The huts are kept toasty by a woodburning stove and underfloor heating, and the ensuite at the end of the hut has a flushing toilet, basin and walk-in shower for yet more comforts. A decked area with an umbrella is excellent for alfresco dining, and there’s a woodfired hot tub and firepit to round off the relaxing vibes. The site aims to go the extra mile by supplying towels, robes, slippers, a hairdryer and a welcome box, plus breakfast packs or hampers (though these need to be ordered in advance). From your shepherd’s hut, you can take off down winding lanes flanked by Cotswolds stone walls or across footpath networks to spectacular valleys. You can also hire a bicycle on site, and the owners will be happy to point you towards historic houses, gin distilleries and tasty food joints.

The Burford shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: The huts are in close proximity to Burford which is a lovely town to visit. They are easy to find and located in peaceful surroundings. The hut is spacious and warm with all the essentials. It is very comfortable and tastefully decorated. Having a wood burner was especially nice in the winter temperatures and the hot tub was lovely. We made use of the firepit and enjoyed star gazing. Very friendly and helpful hosts who were available if needed but who respected our privacy. The welcome hamper was generous and thoughtful. Highly recommend.

Disliked: Nothing.

The Bibury shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: A beautiful place to stay and relax. The shepherds huts are amazing, luxurious and secluded. Every detail is thought of. The welcome basket is a lovely touch. We would highly recommend and love to stay again. The hot tubs are great, but take a while to heat so light the fire well in advance of use.

The Burford shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: The Shepard's hut was lovely and all the staff were very helpful. The welcome pack that was on the counter ready for when we arrived contained some lovely bread and a really nice welcome message. The hot tub was also amazing and we will most definitely be coming back in the summer for a longer stay. Its super easy to find and everyone is happy to help out if we ever had any issues as well as checking up on us once we arrived.

Local attractions

Although it was built in the 17th century as a place from which to observe deer coursing, Lodge Park (10 minutes’ drive) is not your average grandstand, but an elegant edifice now run by the National Trust. From here, trails lead to Sherborne Park Estate, where you may stroll around farmland and woodland, catching occasional glimpses of foxes and badgers. The market town of Chipping Norton (25 minutes) is a great place for a spot of window shopping, especially if you like your antiques. On the outskirts of what is known as the highest town in Oxfordshire, the imposing chimney of the 19th-century Bliss Tweed Mill still stands, a proud reminder of Chipping Norton’s past as a thriving centre for wool production. For a bit more of the past, check out the remains of Chedworth Roman Villa (25 minutes), with its well-preserved mosaics and elaborate underfloor heating system. There’s also a museum displaying artefacts unearthed at the site.
