  • Quiet, secluded and rural site on 10 acres of fenland
  • Two well-stocked fishing lakes
  • Shop, bus stop and local pub all within a few minutes' stroll
Peaceful and with great fishing is how the folk at Ashleigh Lakes sum their pleasant place up – if you're after angling in a quiet and secluded countryside location, bag it here. Family run, Ashleigh is a small, secluded and level site between Peterborough, Spalding and Wisbech in the Lincolnshire Fens. It has two catch and release fishing lakes within a minute or two's walk, stuffed with roach and rudd as well as mirror, common and ghost carp; the bigger lake also has crucian carp, tench and bream. You can fish all the day – and night – long if you wish, either with a day fishing ticket or a 24-hour one; just make sure to bring a valid licence or pick one up at the village post office when you arrive. Two rods are allowed per person. This is a wildlife haven too if your tastes tend more towards nature spotting, with foxes, hares, rabbits, deer and many bird species all roaming or fluttering about... or if you'd just like to amble about or sunbathe, the hedgerows keep the site nicely sheltered from the Fenland winds. Around the region, Ashleigh is 25 minutes' drive from Spalding and Peterborough, 30 from Wisbech and 45 from the biggest nature reserve in the country at The Wash. Amenities include washing-up, toilet and shower facilities all in the corner of the site, together with a chemical disposal point. The village post office is 50 metres from Ashleigh's entrance, as is the local bus stop – although if you ask nicely/are a tad fatigued after a Fens day hiking or cycling, the driver will often drop you off right outside.

Local attractions

As it's the Fens, this is nicely level land around here, just the ticket for gentle walks and bike rides around the local area. As a first stop, amble or have a short pedal along to the Elizabethan Centre a third of a mile away, for bowls, badminton, a pool table or (and) nattering with locals over a cold pint. The local badminton team play most Mondays and Wednesdays and guests are most welcome to join in during their stay. By car, get along to Spalding for an extensive shopping session at the Springfield Shopping Outlet, followed by a wander and a rest around the Springfield Festival Gardens. Peterborough's well worth a day out too, for more shopping as well as strolls along the river, and Boston 40 minutes away is home to the 14th-century Boston Guildhall and a museum at the Maud Foster Tower Windmill.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Wow , what a place ! This was our first time using our caravan and it was a pleasure . Not only because of using our new van .....but the site. I cannot fault it , we were genuinely made to feel so welcome from the site manager his daughter and the other campers that were there before we arrived, a great bunch of people . Pitches were large , level and well maintained- lovely green plush grass Surrounded by trees which kept the wind out a treat. Clean toilet block and showers with decent warm showers . The fishing was amazing - the kids loved it , the smiles on their faces when they were catching carp solidly for hours ....even in the rain they loved it ! A little post office shop two minutes walk away with everything you would need . The site was quiet at night time , you can hear the wildlife whilst relaxing- honestly it was great . Me and my family cannot wait to go back ,a real hidden gem that has given us a great weekend break from the world - it was perfect .

Disliked: Only dislike was we couldn't stay for longer........this time

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This is such a fantastic site. Yes it is back to nature camping. It does have electric and nice hot showers but it is not the kind of site where there will be entertainment etc. It is exactly what is advertised. Colin and Shelly who manage the site are two of the most friendly and helpful people I have met. They helped my son when he was having trouble at the lake, not to mention helping us with our tent etc. The site has a wonderful family/friendly atmosphere and when there was one small altercation on bank Holiday weekend Colin dealt with it in the most professional manner. The noise was stopped quickly and the efficiently. I could not recommend this site enough!!

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This was our third visit and we've loved it yet again. It was great to see the stairs have been replaced into the toilet/shower block. Fishing was as our previous visit with the children enjoying a few catches. We visited local English heritage sites. Our children also enjoyed the chicken and geese on site. It was lovely to meet Colin and his daughter this time around. They were spot on to deal with and resolve issues.

Disliked: still not enough toilets and showers for when the site is full.

Liked: Everything! Peaceful stay, music was played at a reasonable volume until a reasonable hour. We went for the fishing and was not disappointed, fantastic lake, well stocked with very nice fish. Will be returning!

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Other campers

Disliked: The fishing is shocking, there is only 1 lake and not 2 as the first is overgrown - the second lake is completely overstocked to the point that fish are constantly gasping for air on the surface - kids were putting a landing net in the edge and scooping 4 or 5 6-8lb carp out every time, if you have zero angling ability then this place is for you as anyone can catch here all day - 20 carp an hour is easy, the bank was also strewn with rubbish the whole time we were there. The shower and toilet facilities are in a shocking state and really need to be cleaned more regularly, there are also only 2 x showers and toilets between a site that has around 40 pitches with the lake camping. The bins also need to be kept up to more regularly as they were over flowing and smelly everyday. The manager is an aggressive control freak who uses the place as his own social club, if you complain or even ask about anything he just shouts “if you don’t like it pack up and leave” several people were told this including myself while we were there. He drives round with his daughter now and again and tells people what they can and can’t do, If you are one of his pals though you could do what you want without issue. One night they all got drunk and fell out and were shouting and screaming at each other till after midnight, it was very close to a full on drunken brawl - the language was shocking and the manager was involved. This place is ideal for single blokes or groups of blokes who don’t know much about fishing but want to catch carp and get drunk and act stupid - this is not a family friendly site in my opinion and I would not go there again if it was free. It’s a real shame as it could be a lovely peaceful angling paradise if it had a decent manager and some investment from the owner, who we were told by the manager has no interest in the place and doesn’t care if it’s open or closed and if all the fish die. A real shame as it could be lovely there.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This place is just amazing, the pitches are huge, parking by your tent and great friendly staff! The fishing is brilliant the big lake is brimming from little tiddlers to huge carp! We cannot wait to come again in the future. Big thank you to the site manager and his daughter who run the place superbly.. toilets and showers were clean and regularly stocked ( admitantly a few of the other campers nearly ruined this by throwing up everywhere and other things on more than one occasion) but it was dealt with swiftly! Big thank you again for allowing us to borrow a dehooking mat and passing some of your knowledge on when using the table shop regarding bait it worked a treat! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Disliked: Nothing, this place is brilliant for your and older kids and people looking to fish and relax so cannot say I disliked any of it!
