Local attractions

Keeping holidaymakers of all ilks happily occupied since times of yore, the Lincolnshire seaside capital Skegness is a top pick for a coastal day; there are reasons why one Mr Butlins picked Skeggy as the setting of his first holiday park venture back in the 1930s… Have at least a day here on the sandy beach and the lengthy pier, greeting the honking inhabitants of the Natureland seal sanctuary, and having fish and chips (many times) at your own fave Skegness spot. Leaving Skegness (boo), Ingoldmells, with its seven-day indoor market and the Fantasy Island amusement park, is also 20 minutes' drive from the site. Mablethorpe, home to an award-wining beach and another seal centre in the Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary and Wildlife Centre, is a couple of minutes further along the coast. Inland, make for Alford to see its famed five-sailed windmill or the kid-friendly artefacts in the Hackett Barn Museum, to Horncastle (15 minutes) for antique hunting or to Louth for the town markets including the last remaining cattle market in Lincolnshire. Or stride out into the countryside instead: hardened hikers have heaps of options in the picworthy Lincolnshire Wolds.
