  • Wild camping on a family-run farm and business park in Leicestershire
  • Half an hour’s drive from Leicester city centre and its sights
  • Businesses such as café, CrossFit gym and jewellery-making classes
Your next campout could be in the backyard of an ancient and splendid manor house… and that’s because The Manor at Tur Langton is right next to such a place, dating back to 1066. Over the past 30 years, the 900-acre family-run agricultural farm here has evolved into a rural business park with the house and farmyard hosting over 40 businesses… and can be next to touch down, this time for some relaxation of the wild camping sort. Half an hour’s drive away from Leicester city centre, this dog-friendly site (with saplings overhead and grassy pitches below your feet) is a rural retreat in a characterful Leicestershire village. With a man-made lake within walking distance of the site, there are many public footpaths for fans of hiking to find entertainment too. With all the firms in the business park, there’s much to do (as long as you book in advance), from jewellery-making courses, makeup tutorials and CrossFit classes to eating a sweet treat in the café or even getting your hair done. Some of the other offerings around the site include holistic therapy, an osteopath and beauticians. Back on site, there's an outdoor playground and the manor also doubles up as a wedding event venue so small gatherings are available to book in the Woo Woo Party paddock for a bit of outdoor socialising. Whenever you fancy wetting your palate with a meal out, Kibworth, five minutes’ drive away or a 45-minute walk, has a few places to eat, including an Italian restaurant and several pubs.

Local attractions

You may already have a manor on your doorstep, but that doesn’t mean that’s the only dose of history around. In fact, this area is pretty packed with a range of historical sites, from the 16th-century Burghley House (50 minutes' drive) and its fine gardens, tearooms and deer park to museums, including one all about a murder-accused king at the King Richard III Visitor Centre (half an hour) or the more green-fingered museum at The Secret Garden (20 minutes), a picnicking haven. Once you’ve finished with your travel down memory lane, the National Space Centre (35 minutes) has a planetarium and space galleries to help you sharpen up your stargazing skills. Still skywards, Tropical Birdland (40 minutes) is a sanctuary for parrots and exotic birds, while Warwick Castle (an hour and five minutes) runs bird of prey shows… just be sure not to miss them while you’re preoccupied in the maze and 3D trails. On the flip side, getting lost might be the right way forward in Leicester city centre (half an hour), as you’re likely to find shops, restaurants or galleries to fall into around most corners.
