  • Walking, cycling and fishing right on site in the estate grounds
  • Bar, restaurant and pizzeria; farm shop, café and modern shower block
There’s something really rather special about Glamping at The Engine Yard Belvoir Castle. After all, it’s not every day you holiday right next-door to a castle – and a very famous one at that, for Belvoir Castle has a starring role in the notorious TV drama The Crown. With spectacular Vale of Belvoir views from the camping field, tents are prettily decked in fairy lights and bunting, and come kitted out with a table and benches for alfresco suppers, as well as camping chairs so you can cosy up around the firepit. Once inside your bijou new home, all is snug and welcoming, with rugs, lamps and double bed, and there’s no need to bring bedding or towels as everything is laid on for you. A mini cooking kit is provided too, but the glamping site is right next door to The Engine Yard, a nattily restored complex of estate buildings turned retail village. Here you can sample artisan cocktails at the bar, eat on the gastropub terrace or order a wood-fired pizza takeaway to eat back at base, so you may never get round to doing any actual cooking. Stuff’s always going on at The Engine Yard too, from live-music gigs to farmers’ markets and sales in the indie boutiques. And while you’re there, it would be criminal not to have a mosey around the castle’s ornate apartments and fabulous formal gardens. A round up of facilities on this well-equipped site include a modern utilities block with showers, sink, loos, mirror and a handy changing space in wet rooms, as well as a washing-up area and running water.

Bell tent

Liked: Really well equipped glamping bell tent with everything we needed for a family of 4. The kitchen kit was great, the firepit was fantastic for a little BBQ and for toasting marshmallows and it was great having our own private toilet and shower! Views are amazing!

Disliked: Only slight thing was no gate between the car park area and the field which with kids aged 3 and 5 was just a little bit anxiety provoking. An addition of a gate would be so helpful as a future suggestion.

Local attractions

You don’t need to go very far for great walks, as there are way-marked trails right across Belvoir Castle’s Capability Brown-designed grounds. Cyclists, there are family routes in the Vale of Belvoir, as well as the hilly and more challenging Redmile Loop. Anglers, bring your rods to try out the fishing lakes on the estate, and there’s a golf course within 20 minutes’ drive. Young kids can run around on the soft play area at Little Jack’s Farm and Garden Centre (10 minutes) as teens stage paintball shoot-outs at Adrenalin Jungle Activity Centre. For more sedate days out, wildlife-lovers might get to see yellowhammers and bats in Muston Meadows National Nature Reserve (10 minutes). There are wonderful display of spring blossom at the National Trust-run Belton House, and you might like to reward yourselves (you are on holiday, after all) with a tasting session at Hanwell Wine Estate (both 25 minutes).
