  • Seven-acre family-run site between Newent and Ross-on-Wye
  • Small village shop and pub within a mile
  • Play area, football, treehouse, games room and stone-baked pizzas
It might be a small site, but you'll find quite the heap to do for big folks and kids at and around Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park near Ross-on-Wye. First up there's the fishing within a couple of miles… And then there's the playground on site, in a scenic and spacious setting (check out the site pics) which also comes with a small pond, a five-a-side football pitch, a games room, indoor table tennis and – huzzah! – a treehouse. Woodland walks are steps away from the site, as Haywood is close to Queens Wood on the edge of the Forest of Dean; and canoeing, kayaking, fishing, golf, horse riding, an indoor pool, mountain biking and tennis are all available in the surrounding countryside. Haywood is a family-run site a short drive from the M50, between Newent and Ross-on-Wye, and with a decent range of guest amenities including showers, a toilet block, disabled facilities, a washing-up area, chemical disposal and recycling. Gas cylinders and ice pack freezing are also available for guests. The site also won winners of the Tested by Tots Best Campsite award for 2022. Pubs, restaurants, shops and public transport are 10 minutes' walk away.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A wonderful family friendly (and dog friendly) campsite. The staff are so welcoming, facilities are perfect, super clean and everything you need, and so much for children to so. Pizzas served in the evening are delicious. There’s a play park, massive games room and football pitch. Beautiful woodland walk right next door (bluebells were stunning). The owners have done a fantastic job creating a place that is welcoming and also allows parents to have a break too. Well thought out. We will be coming back - highly recommend to others.

Disliked: The only thing we found slightly awkward was not being able to park on the grass - we had to park on the road to unload our gear, which meant having to stop and move every time someone needed to drive past. It meant setting up and packing away took a bit of extra time.

From the manager: Thank you, we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We love the Bluebells at this time of year too, and the pizzas ;) We appreciate your understanding about the temporary unloading/parking measures we have in place. The weather has not been kind to us this year and our grass is still recovering. We would love to see you return again soon.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Staff were incredibly friendly and accomodating. The site and facilities were clean and well kept. The games room provided great opportunity to get out of the rain and play some ping pong 🏓.

Disliked: I feel it would be helpful to have some lighting in the Meadowbrook part to help those needing to use the toilet facilitate at night.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we are glad we enjoyed your stay. The games room is great to escape the weather. We do try a promote dark skies so we can all enjoy the starry skies at night.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Loved our stay here. Beautiful site, well laid out. Toilets were always clean, showers were very well thought out with lots of room. Well stocked site shop, great games room. Staff were very helpful and friendly. We stayed over the Easter weekend, and the staff brought everyone an Easter egg to their vans. There's a lovely woodland walk next to the site, although with the wet weather we've had recently, a pair of waterproof boots were a must.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: This is our second time staying here and will definitely be back, lovely games room for the kids and park and football pitch, having the little shop is handy home made pizzas are amazing there a must, and lovely forest on the site for walking the dog and going to the pub. All facilities are clean, The family that own it are all so friendly and welcoming and bought round Easter eggs for the kids on Sunday morning which made there day and was so kind!

Disliked: The only thing the site could with is hand washing facilities where you empty the toilet but it’s really not the end off the world, my husband just walks to the toilet block to do it instead.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: We travelled as a group and requested that we were located together which we were. Location was great right on the walk to the forest. This lead to golf course where they sell drinks and cake. Play area was enjoyed by younger members of the group. Friendly and welcoming. Showers hot and clean.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Lovely rural location near to major routes with good facilities and great showers!

Disliked: Hard standing area on the pitches is very narrow - just wide enough for a motorhome which means it’s hard to avoid muddy wet grass getting in an out. Some lighting would really help parking up in the dark too.

Local attractions

Woodland walks are seconds from the farm and four golf courses are within a three-mile radius. Sports centres and swimming pools are a short drive away. The Malvern Hills and the Brecon Beacons are probably the most visited destinations around this part of the England/Wales border, but plenty of other popular picks are around, like canoeing on the River Wye, wandering around the town of Ross-on-Wye, or fishing on the local lakes. The Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park team also firmly states that the nearby International Centre for Birds of Prey must be visited: it's the oldest birds of prey centre in the world and has lots of opps for seeing many sorts of raptors up close. Go: it's eggscellent. Pottering around the Forest of Dean is another decent day out: if you're going forestwards, take time to stop off at the ancient woodland site of Puzzlewood and then the Clearwell Caves, mined for thousands of years to extract iron ore and now set up as a mining museum. (It should also be pointed out, just because, that some Doctor Who episodes were filmed here.) Within driving distance, both Monmouth and Malvern towns are 20 minutes away, and the cities of Hereford and Gloucester within 25.
