  • Friendly family-run farm estate next to the Forest Of Dean
  • Within easy reach of Symonds Yat Rock, Go Ape and Puzzlewood
  • Views of valley, lakes and fields and heaps of space for dogs to play
Woof woof... This peaceful lakeside retreat is a veritable pup's paradise: not one, but two large off-leash exercise areas and lead walks, a lake to paddle in and heaps of long countryside walking trails to take their humans out and about on. Two licensed fishing lakes, separate from the dog-friendly swimming lake, are also on site; day tickets are available to purchase on site. Near Lydney in Gloucestershire, Forest Oak Farm is a friendly dog-centred farm estate that lies between the banks of the River Severn and the Forest of Dean, and very warmly welcomes dog owners and their canine compadres to come spend some time there; since opening in 2012, the site has been expertly cultivated by the Dodson family – who also run a fab dog training centre on the farm – to provide a scenic spacious site and a welcoming atmos to all. Set out over 20 acres of fields, lakes and woodland filled with mature trees, this is a well-equipped park with plenty of 10-amp metered electric hook-ups and a bathroom block with toilets, showers, accessible facilities, a washing-up area and a laundry room. Foodwise, you can take your barbecue bits down to the smashing lakeside picnic area for an alfresco feast by the water. The site also has two large fenced dog exercise areas. Off site, there are heaps of good places to eat out around in Lydney and a little further afield around Blakeney, Alvington, Parkend and Clearwell – just ask the Dodsons about their favourite dog-friendly food joints.

Liked: Nice peaceful site, close to many visiting places, clean toilets and showers.

Disliked: Site needed some tlc, showers Luke warm, so only used once.

From the manager: Hi I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations but we do try hard to make everyones stay as happy as possible. Sorry that the shower was luke warm and obviously you like a very hot shower. Under government guidelines we need to regulate the water temperature to around 38 degrees, Having tested the water temp at the beginning of the season it was set at 42 degrees as we know in the colder periods people like it a bit hotter. But then we can't please everyone. We do not advertise Wifi so no rating should be given. How can we improve on customer service, we meet you at reception, show you to your pitch explain things and have a smile.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lovely place to stay. Especially loved the secured dog field where we could walk the dog. Where we able to take our dog (who is a husky) in there and take off her lead and let her run. If your in field you can see if someone is approaching so can pop lead back on if need be. The family runing this campsite were so helpful especially there daughter. The toilet block laundry room where there’s also a place to wash dishes. All areas were spotless. Also we loved the way you could pay a bit extra for late departure. So we could leave up until 17.00pm instead of 11am so no rush to leave campsite. A couple on the site used campsite as a base and they were doing all different walks cycling etc all with using the campsite as a base. We didn’t but we definitely going to return and take camper out for day to return in night. We just enjoyed the lovely relaxed feeling of campsite. You can also have BBQ as long as you use the rack to put bbq on them. There is also to small ponds to fish in not used by us but will definitely use when we return. We stayed on pitches which gravel and grass for awning which we Didn’t use ours on this occasion as weather was so nice and we put dog out there on lead and we sat out and enjoyed the weather. Xx

Disliked: The only small negative thing I would say was my nieces and nephew came to visit us. They loved running on the field I believe will be tent field. But I think side could do with a small park area.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Ease of setting up, pitch was drive in/drive out. Very peaceful. Beautiful setting. Clean facilities. Local information very useful.

Disliked: Only one dog field open. Second one closed due to flooding and never found the dog friendly lake only the fishing lakes so our dog couldn't have a swim. Difficulty contacting site staff on arrival, have to phone but no answer. No hot water in site showers or washing-up room. Electricity ran out at pitch overnight which meant woke up cold, without heating, hot water and fridge/freezer defrosted, had to wait for site staff to come and top it up. Bit of a building site, farmhouse being renovated which in itself wasn't noisy or and issue but the digger near the pitches starting at 07.30 one morning was more annoying.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: nice big grounds, first time taking my dog on holiday, two good large enclosed dog excersise walks, two nice fishing ponds, with lots of fish, good if you had kids wanting to get into course fishing, good facilities, nice and level pitch( ours was gravel) nice and calm and peacefull site,

Disliked: no wifi at the moment, but this was not a problem for me.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review, Wifi is an issue for us as it will cost £4000 to have set up and an annual charge of £600 and for such a small site we can not justify charging customers around £10 per day to use it. So sadly we will not be adding it. But who wants wifi when you are holiday anyway. Steve

Site is okay for a 1 night stop over otherwise wouldn’t recommend.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet camp site with a great shower/toilet block which was spotlessly clean and powerful showers. Two good sized fenced dog exercise areas and nice lakes and walks.

Disliked: Washing up room never seemed to have warm water at any time of day which was a shame. Worth noting that you need to turn the “switch” for hookup to work. Only discovered this on the last night and had assumed our can electric hookup had failed as never had to do this on other sites?

Please be aware there are a number of farms using the same postcode. Do not turn off the A48 as the site entrance is on the main road. Keep going until you see a large white house between Lydney and Blakeney Village, called 'The Willows', with white painted stones around the driveway and garden. The site is directly opposite that house. The farm entrance has large flag poles on either side.

Local attractions

Forest Oak Farm is in a splendid spot for easy access to the Forest of Dean, the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the wider Gloucestershire, south Wales and south-west England areas. Adventurers can test their mettle on the high ropes course at Go Ape, five miles from base, and over at Puzzlewood, eight miles away, there's a walking trail that meanders through an ancient 14-acre forest filled with towering trees and rugged rock formations. At Clearwell Caves, right next door to Puzzlewood, explore its sprawling natural cave system and learn all about the forest's 4,500-year iron ore and ochre mining history. The Forest Of Dean, around half an hour's walk from the park, is full to the brim with woodland walks, cycle tracks, lakes and secluded valleys. Be sure to bring your binoculars, because the forest is home to wild boar and deer that can (and should) be admired from afar. The smashing Symonds Yat Rock is a mere 25-minute drive away from Forest Oak Farm and provides visitors with plenty of fun outdoorsy and sightseeing opps; take one of the many waymarked trails that link it with the River Wye and a number of circular walks into the surrounding forest, visit the ancient Iron Age hill fort and – if you're there between April and August – point your trusty binoculars towards the nearby cliffs to spot the peregrine falcons that nest and hunt around them. Canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding and mountaineering are available around the village of Symonds Yat too.
