  • Scenic grassy site in the Peak District National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Bakewell and 25 from Matlock and Buxton
  • On a 170-acre farm a 20-minute drive from Chatsworth House
Fancy living out your wildest Jane Austen dreams? Head along to Greencroft Caravan Site, a family-friendly spot on the outskirts of Derbyshire village Middleton-by-Youlgreave and 25 minutes’ drive from Buxton. The site is well placed in the stunning Peak District National Park, placing guests within easy reach of leisurely ambles (what’s a good Austen hero or heroine without some moody strolls?) including the High Peak Trail and Tissington Trail (10 minutes away at Parsley Hay), and Monsal Trail, which starts 20 minutes away on Coombs Road. The connections don’t stop there either, as it’s just 20 minutes from the site to Chatsworth House, a spectacular 17th-century stately home that was name-dropped in the original Pride and Prejudice novel, and which doubled as Pemberley in both film adaptations. After lengthy days of explores and hours of gliding around grand houses, return to the site for peaceful stays on a 170-acre beef farm. There are sprawling and scenic vistas from here over the valley where the Bradford, the Wye and the Derwent rivers meet, and nothing to disturb the peace but gentle moos from the resident cows.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: As 1st time caravaners, the experience was made so much easier by James on site. From the moment he made contact to introduce himself, he advised us of the best pitch for newcomers. On arrival we were met by his dog who was so playful and friendly. Whilst we were on site, james regularly popped up to check everything was OK for us. The weather may not have been the greatest (but this IS England) but it didn't detract from the splendour and beauty of the sprawling countryside. The sounds of the cows, sheep and chickens were a pleasant change from speeding motorists. My wife and I would recommend the farm for anyone wishing to get away from civilisation and relaxing. Thanks again James.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The farmers was friendly and welcoming and helpfull Not much else to like as it was just a field with an electric hookup

Disliked: Thanks to the rain and mud getting the caravan to back up onto the levelling ramps Mud and soggy grass pitch runined the stay thanks to the weather oh well it is what it is Annoyingly the cows and a local church bell marking every 15 mins and top of the hour like big ben making sleep impossible for the kids

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Such a lovely family who owned the site. Couldn't do enough to help.

Disliked: Was a shame that it had rained continuously before we arrived. Site is on a hill and there isn't any flat pitches. The owner helped to tow out!

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Fantastic site for peace and quiet, James and Sophie are brilliant and have a great sense of humour!! Three phone/dongle coverage is absolutely brilliant!! :-)

Disliked: Quite out in the "sticks" and some pitches sloping but James advised us to use the flatter pitches so no levelling needed. Do watch the pavements if you wander into village as sloping and covered in moss - guess who found out with a trip on his backside when walking dog ;-)

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: This site is all about location - the scenery is stunning in all directions and the site is small and secluded. There was only a light touch from the owners who left us to enjoy the peace and tranquillity. Whilst Middleton has no shops, there's a pleasant walk along the river into Youlgreave should you need a pub or home supplies. it is a perfect base from which to explore the other long attractions in this area.

Disliked: The site photo is a bit misleading and is taken looking the bottom end of the site. It is definitely not flat. The unusual shape of the field meant we were hemmed into a corner. Luckily we had great neighbours so this didn't impact on the visit.

Local attractions

Passion for stately homes stoked by Chatsworth? Luckily there’s no shortage of alternatives hereabouts: it’s a 20-minute drive to Haddon Hall; Kedleston, Sudbury (and its museum of childhood) and Hardwick are within about 45 minutes; and the Georgian-era Melbourne Hall is an hour away. Taking to the saddle, bike hire is handily close by at Parsley Hay and Hassop Station, both within 20 minutes. Prefer to tour in style? Sign up for a vintage tour in an old Ford Phaeton, taking in dams and dales, train tracks and troglodytes, moorlands and local munch. For urban days, there’s plenty round here to choose from. Start by indulging a sweet tooth 15 minutes away in Bakewell, home of the Bakewell pudding, before travelling on to Buxton (25 minutes) to swing from the trees at Go Ape and dive below the surface at Poole’s Cavern (plus lots more). Keen on entertaining the whole family in one easy day? Head to Matlock 25 minutes from base, where the Heights of Abraham alpine cable car offers up views, Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park has rides and adventures for younger kids, and there are a handful of museums for mum and dad. For more hair-raising adventures, it’s less than 40 minutes to Alton Towers.
