  • Derbyshire glamping within the Melbourne Hall estate

  • As featured on TV in Johnny Vegas: Carry on Glamping
If you were in the UK in 2021, you may well have found yourself getting stuck into the TV programme Johnny Vegas: Carry on Glamping and wondering what happened next after the cameras stopped rolling… Well, here's your answer… and your chance to try it out for yourself. In the series, Johnny and gang set about rescuing and restoring a collection of vintage vehicles, turning them into characterful and comfy places to stay. Now the original collection has been expanded and settled in to a new location: The Field of Dreams at Melbourne Hall. This Derbyshire location is within the grounds of a smart Georgian country house on the edge of the village of Melbourne, between Derby and Leicester. It’s a handy spot indeed, as it means being able to walk to the village’s farm shop, small supermarket, pubs, cafés and takeaways in about 10 minutes (no going hungry around here…) And in fact you don't even have to go that far for your eats and drinks, as there are several options within the Melbourne Hall Courtyard (at the entrance to the estate). These include a coffee hut (with cakes and ice creams too), a tea room and the Brewhouse, serving up craft ales, wines and fizz alongside Italian pinsas (like a lighter version of pizza). A deli, a wine shop and a craft beer shop will sort you out if you’d rather have a bit of a picnic by your accommodation. Each of the accommodation options has its own character, but what they all have in common is beds made up ready for your arrival, and your own little kitchen space for prepping meals and storing drinks in the fridge. You’ll also have access to a toilet and shower, either within the unit or very close by.

Local attractions

If you're here at the right time, start with a stroll around the gardens of Melbourne Hall, and perhaps a wander around the house too – opening times are limited, so check ahead of time to see what will be open when you’re here. From your own lovely estate, it’s only about a mile to another – Staunton Harold, a National Trust property where you can walk among woods and wildflowers, try the adventure playground or head to the reservoir for fishing and watersports like windsurfing and paddleboarding. For other days out, you may like to take a walk to Calke Abbey (55 minutes on foot), meet the woolly ones at Charnwood Forest Alpacas (15 minutes’ drive) or meet exotic beasts at Twycross Zoo (20 minutes). Petrolheads might also like to check out what’s on at Donington Park Circuit (five minutes).
