This is a gorgeous countryside location, and the owners recommend getting out to explore the local area on foot, by bike or kayaking along nearby rivers. If you’ve got the kids with you, you may also like to consider taking them to Rāmkalni (half an hour’s drive), an open-air amusement park with things like a toboggan run, bungee trampolines and boat hire. For more outdoor activities, head to the trails of Gauja National Park – the country’s largest national park is packed with landscapes of cliffs, caves and springs, and has several castles and other historic monuments to check out. Turaida Castle (half an hour) is probably the best known, but places like Cēsis Castle (50 minutes) are also worth a visit. To see the scenery from above, a ride on the Sigulda cable car (35 minutes) is a must. While this may be a countryside site, it’s not far from the coast, so pack your swimming kit or surfboard and head to the long dune-backed beaches of Skulte (15 minutes) and Saulkrasti (20 minutes).
