Piombino has a pretty marina and distant views of the island of Elba from Piazza Giovanni Bovio, at the far end of which is the neo-Gothic Faro della Rocchetta lighthouse. The Museo Archeologico del Territorio di Populonia has vases, jewellery and other displays belonging to the Etruscan people who used to live along these shores. Have the views of Elba made you curious about the place where Napoleon was exiled in the early 19th century? You can reach the island in about half an hour by ferry from Piombino. Check out the spectacular beaches and Villa San Martino Residenza Napoleonica, the elegant mansion that housed the French emperor. The countryside around Bolgheri (half an hour’s drive) is dotted with vineyards, which produce –among others – world-class wines like Ornellaia, Sassicaia and other so-called Super-Tuscans. Many wine producers offer informative tours and tastings, usually accompanied by charcuterie and cheese boards.
