Beaches are within 15 kilometres of Casa Giulia – but which one should you go to for watersports? Lido Panama Beach (40 minutes’ drive) has a popular kitesurfing school; and back on shore you can unwind with a slice (or two, or three) in a pizzeria. Appetite ignited, you may want to book in for a winery tour or tasting at Feudo Principi di Butera (50 minutes) too. When you’re in a sightseeing mood, you might want to start with one of the closer spots, Piazza Armerina (35 minutes). The medieval town has a church with restored paintings and frescoes and a mix of Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Butera (35 minutes) is one of Sicily’s more well-known medieval villages. The old town has narrow streets with churches, shops and restaurants. Parrocchia Santuario San Rocco (35 minutes) is just outside town. The 16th-century church is a pilgrim spot with views of the Gulf of Gela. That just leaves Comiso (35 minutes) and Ragusa (an hour). Comiso, the closer of the two, has a historic castle, churches and Christian catacombs, whereas Ragusa (further afield) has an old town with a large collection of historic sites like the Ragusa Cathedral, museums, the churches of Giardino Ibleo and the Duomo di San Giorgio.
