Sea taxis depart daily from the eye-catching, multi-coloured port of Scario (five minutes’ drive) to sea caves in the soaring cliffs at Capo Palinuro (40 minutes), or Masseta beaches on the Tyrrhenian coastline that can only be reached by sea. On a longer day trip, you can snorkel and swim in the Cilento National Marine Park’s gorgeous Baia degli Infreschi (an hour). If you prefer to explore on foot, there are many Cilento trails leading through the lush vegetation of the protected park. More adventurous types might fancy hiking through the dramatic Grotte del Bussento (40 minutes, look out for lizards), while families can stroll up to the Fontana Capello (45 minutes) and the waterside picnic spot. And of course the Cilento offers up history too; the Ancient Greek ruins of Paestum (an hour and 10 minutes) pull in the crowds, as does the vast, UNESCO-listed Certosa di San Lorenzo (45 minutes), a splendid abbey with a maze of courtyards, baroque churches and peaceful cloisters.
