Looking for a getaway surrounded by nature? Recharge your batteries at Camping Youpendi, a leafy five-acre oasis on the outskirts of Ardèche’s Tournon-sur-Rhône. This peaceful spot resounds to the song of birds, and it’s spot on for relaxed time as a couple, with families or friends. The swimming pool and paddling pools open from mid-April to the end of September, or if you prefer to touch base with nature, you can swim, fish and snooze on the sandy beach edging the Doux River, which can be accessed directly from the pitches. Everything has been thought out to make life easy on site; you have access to handy amenities like the bar (open every day throughout the season), a snack bar serving homemade woodfired pizzas every evening, and a kids’ club that keeps children busy in the morning during July and August. There’s also a small convenience store, a book exchange, board games to borrow, a mini-golf course, ping-pong tables and a large playground with slides, a zip line, rope bridge and trampolines. Older children and adults can play around on the ball courts during the day – and let’s not forget the evening entertainment: pétanque tournaments, pre-dinner games, bingo, live music, karaoke, DJ nights and pool sessions – quite enough to keep everyone very well entertained indeed.

Take the kid to see the ornate stone temple hand-carved by France’s most famous postman at the Palais Idéal (40 minutes’ drive). If you’d like to tire them out and discover stunning landscapes at the same time, cycling the Vélorail des Gorges du Doux (20 minutes) through stunning Ardèche countryside by rail-bike should fit the bill nicely. Get up close to zebras and rhinos in the drive-through Safari de Peaugres (40 minutes), where there’s also a petting zoo for younger visitors, or watch the antics of cheeky, colourful birds in the Parrot Park (20 minutes). If the kids have not yet had their fill of wildlife, try the Crocodile Farm (an hour and 10 minutes) to watch the crocs being fed, or let toddlers feed the goats and sheep at Mille et une Cornes (35 minutes). Anyone with a sweet tooth will be happy with jaunts to La Cité du Chocolat Valrhona (10 minutes) to create their own chocolate flavour, or the chance to sample regional speciality nougat at the Palace of Sweets and Nougat (55 minutes). You can also taste orange-and-rum-soaked Pogne de Romans brioches – an Ardèche favourite – at Maison Pascalis (half an hour).
