What a restful, verdant setting awaits for guests at Camping O’Aka, in the Lot region about five minutes’ drive from the rural village of Leyme. Wherever you go on this scenic site, you’ll be greeted with stunning views over the Ségala hills from pitches surrounded by wildflowers and shaded by trees. The site’s heated outdoor pool is arguably one of the best places to admire those views from – swim a few lengths at a leisurely pace, then settle on a lounger to soak up a bit of sun and scenery. If the kids need a bit more activity, that’s all sorted too, as the site is home to tennis courts, a multisports field and a playground with swings and slides. So there’s plenty to do here – and that’s before you’ve even tried the organised activities for younger kids and teens, the exercise classes and water-based games in the pool, and the pétanque evenings when you can compete against your neighbours. There’s also a fair amount of cultural stuff going on – think concerts, shows and book presentations – and locally you can go truffle tasting with a local grower, and attend basket-weaving or soap-making workshops. A bar serving drinks and snacks opens up in the main July and August holidays, and handy family-friendly facilities include a laundry room and a modern bathroom block with a parent-and-baby washroom and wheelchair-accessible facilities.

Leyme is just a little way outside the Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park, so a drive of half an hour or so will get you to some fabulous landscapes with hiking and bike trails, caves and cute villages to explore. One of the most well-known sights is of course the Gouffre de Padirac (25 minutes’ drive), where you can take a boat tour to see some of the subterranean scenery. Other activities in the natural park include horse riding, walks to historic sights like the Dolmen de l’Igue de Planagrèze (half an hour) and guided tours of Château de Vaillac (45 minutes), which dates back to the 15th century. There’s also the chance to see endangered bears and wolves at Parc Animalier de Gramat (25 minutes). Take a dip into a couple of popular villages with outings to Figeac (half an hour) and Rocamadour (35 minutes), both packed with medieval features. For wine lovers, some time in Cahors (an hour) is a must, to sample some of the local tipples, visit the farmers’ market, take a riverside stroll and see the UNESCO-listed Pont Valentré.
