Love the Dordogne region, but keen to escape the crowds of the busy areas? Take off to Les Maisons de Coline, a quiet 2.5-acre estate in the dramatically scenic Gorges de la Dordogne area. This is a lesser-known part of the region for many tourists, but it’s certainly still got heaps of attractions for visitors, including peaceful bike and hiking trails, lake beaches for swimming and watersports, and historical châteaux to visit. And of course there's the river itself, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the site. Fabulous natural landscapes are all around, with the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park a little way to the south and the Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park to the north. Major urban areas like Clermont-Ferrand and Brive-la-Gaillarde are about an hour and a half’s drive away; this is an area where your local village has just 20 year-round residents. Nearby Sérandon, five minutes' drive away, is home to a restaurant, a bar and a grocery shop, along with a gorgeous 12th-century church. Away from large settlements, this is a very peaceful spot that’s in both a UNESCO biosphere reserve and a LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) Refuge. That means there's plenty of wildlife to spot, whether you're exploring the area or chilling out at the estate, which has orchards and is bordered by meadows and woods. While you're here you'll be able to take a swim in the outdoor pool, have a game of pétanque and use the spacious communal area, which has a kitchen and lounge area. There's also a little restaurant and bar on site for laidback meals and drinks.

Getting out to see the scenery is pretty straightforward – you can start with the easy five-minute walk to Belvédère de Gratte Bruyère viewpoint before heading off to find local attractions like the Cascade de Salins (half an hour’s drive). There are plenty of walks to try out nearby, or you may prefer to take a ride on the Pédalorail du Grand Pays de Salers (40 minutes). Sticking to the outdoor activities, Lac de la Triouzoune (15 minutes) is a good destination for a day out, with beaches and watersports to try out. Families may also like to have a go at finding their way through the Labyrinthe maïs de Bassignac (25 minutes) while garden lovers explore the various themed areas at Les Jardins Sothys (45 minutes). A château visit surely has to be on the cards, too – a good pick nearby is Château d’Auzers (40 minutes), which has been home to the same family since the 15th century.
