If you’re keen to keep on your toes activity-wise, there are several untamed hiking areas around the site. Col de Provo (25 minutes’ drive) offers far-reaching vistas over forested foothills, or you can yomp up Monte Sant’Appianu (35 minutes) for spectacular views back down to the coast. After all that, you’ll be pleased to cool off with a spot of wild swimming in Lac de Chiatra (25 minutes).
For a taster of local gastronomic heritage, visit the oyster and mussel farms around Étang de Diane (20 minutes) before lunching on their produce in waterside restaurants. Also close by is Clos Fornelli winery (15 minutes), where you can tour the vines, chat to the owners and purchase your preferred vintage after a tasting session.
You have bags of culture here too; there’s an ancient Roman villa, the distinct layout of a town and a museum packed with local finds at Aléria Archaeological Site (25 minutes). Alternatively, you can combine a beach walk with a history lesson and visit the Tour de Diana (20 minutes), a 16th-century Genoese defence tower overlooking the coastline.
