Camping Domaine des Etangs du Plessac is among the hikes, climbs and mountain biking of the Perigord-Limousin Natural Regional Park, about nine kilometres from canoe excursions, paddleboarding and boat trips from Brantôme and 10 from the Dronn riverside village of Bourdeilles.
Several more scenic sights as well as the smashing setting of the Dronn river are at Brantôme, including a belltower that's one of the oldest in France; a pretty bridge, and a spectacular abbey dating back to the eighth century, with woodland cliffs rising behind it. Seven kilometres south, you could take a look at Bourdeilles and its 13th-century castle, and from there to the Château de Puyguilhem, to Brantôme's north-west.
Just outside Brantôme, the Grotte de Villars is the only cave system in the Périgord that has prehistoric paintings as well as rock formations. It and the Grotte de Rouffignac are the biggest cave systems in the Dordogne, with over eight kilometres of passageways between them; about an hour and a quarter's drive to the south-east, the tremendous caves of Lascaux are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley.
