Staying at Camp Klenovica puts you in prime position for day trips to several national parks; if you’re keen on hiking, make for the forested trails of Risnjak National Park, where you just might spot brown bears or lynxes. There are serious rock-climbing opportunities among the limestone landscapes of Northern Velebit National Park, while spectacular waterfalls and walking routes through alpine foothills await in Plitvice Lakes National Park (all around an hour’s drive).
Head for seafront Senj (15 minutes) to tour the 16th-century hilltop Nehaj Fortress, amble around the town walls and have a wander into history museums and trendy art galleries in the charismatic old town. When you run out of steam for any more sightseeing, there are loads of bars and cafés for refuelling with a coffee or ice cream.
In Novi Vinodolski (15 minutes) you can hire motor boats and sailing dinghies to explore the coastline, rent a quad bike or scooter, play tennis and mini golf, or go parasailing over the Adriatic waves. If that’s too adventurous for the kids, hire bikes and cycle the safe seafront promenade between Klenovica and the quiet neighbouring village of Smokvica Krmpotska (half an hour’s ride), which has diving platforms leading into the sea.
