Seeking a small, simple and serene base for your North Devon camping trip? Have a look at Higher Loveham Farm, which hosts an adults-only pop-up site during the summer months. This is good old classic camping as it’s been done for generations, with no electric hookups but plenty of peaceful space at the grass pitches.Facilities include the essentials of toilets, showers, wifi and a covered washing-up area, but nothing to spoil the peace of this pretty rural setting. Awnings and barbecues are permitted should you require a few more mod cons for your break, but you may also like to note that the village pub (a mile and a half away in Umberleigh) does good meals. There’s also a railway station in the village, and a village shop, café and another pub are within a mile of the site. Dogs are welcome to join you for a break at the farm, but they’ll need to be on good behaviour so they don’t spook the resident animals (horses, ponies and sheep all live here). Whether you’ve brought a canine chum or not, you should find plenty of places for a good walk nearby – either along the local country lanes or in the bigger expanses of Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks (25 minutes and 40 minutes’ drive away respectively). You may well be coming here for the full countryside experience, but it’s also worth noting that the coast isn’t far off – Westward Ho! is about half an hour away by car.

Devon’s pair of national parks offer up almost endless options for walks, bike rides and other outdoor activities – Exmoor National Park (25 minutes’ drive) is the place for gentle walks while Dartmoor (40 minutes) has more dramatic and challenging scenery. Closer to the farm, you may also like to take strolls along the banks of the River Taw or bike along the Tarka Trail from Barnstaple (20 minutes). Places like The Castle Hill Estate and RHS Garden Rosemoor (both 20 minutes) are also good choices for a gentle wander, or you could head out for a seaside walk on the South West Coast Path (half an hour). If you’re more of a beach fan, aim instead for the lovely golden sands of Westward Ho! beach (half an hour), which is also a favourite spot for surfers. Weather not going your way? Aim for indoor attractions like the military displays of Cobbaton Combat Collection (10 minutes) or the sparkly wonders of Dartington Crystal (20 minutes).
