If waking up to sunlight filtering through the trees sounds like something you’d enjoy, Old Lanwarnick is the Cornish base for you. At 15 minutes’ drive from seaside Looe, accommodation on this 34-acre farm site is in spacious glamping pods laid out with beds (all linens supplied), a dining area and cosy seating. Cooking is taken care of by an outdoor kitchen, and barbecues are available too. Even better, there are exclusive-use shower blocks right next to each pod on raised decking.
Whatever your holiday style, you, your family and any accompanying dogs will have lots to keep you busy. For a relaxing day on the farm amid the peaceful sounds of the countryside, breakfast in the fresh air and watch the farm come to life, coffee in hand. Spend time wandering through the valley, making friends with the alpacas, following woodland trails (great exercise for the dogs), or simply getting lost in landscapes brimming with wildlife.
When adventure calls, just pack a picnic and head to the coast. There are several beaches within 20 minutes’ drive, including Looe, Hannafore and Samphire – the latter is handy for walking your canine companions. Return in the evening to your peaceful base, and enjoy dinner cooked over your outdoor grill – and as the sun dips below the horizon on clear nights, all that remains to do is settle down and watch the sky fill with stars.

Explore the woodland and countryside on foot, cycle safely in the quiet lanes or go birdwatching for plovers and oystercatchers at Hannafore Point (15 minutes’ drive). Up the pace a bit with watersports including bodyboarding and kayaking at Talland Bay (also 15 minutes), windsurfing at Polkerris (35 minutes) or catching consistent surfing waves off Fistral Beach in Newquay (45 minutes).
Lovers of ancient history can drive to Duloe Stone Circle in 10 minutes; made of white quartz, it is one of Cornwall’s smallest prehistoric relics and dates back a whopping 4,000 years. There’s more heritage to soak up at Duloe’s St Cuby and St Leonard Church, with its unusual octagonal font carved with figures of dolphins and griffins.
If you’d care to indulge in a tasting of award-winning local ciders and apple juices, head for Cornish Orchards (15 minutes); you can also pick up artisan souvenirs such as chutneys and sauces from their farm shop. Gourmets may also like to test the top-notch seafood restaurants in Looe (also 15 minutes), where fish is bought straight from the boats every morning.
