Wake up with wallabiez at Wingz and Thingz… The accommodation at this Cornish sanctuary is in a bee-themed converted horsebox, where your neighbours are parrots, cockatoos, wallabies and raccoon dogs. These beasties are part of an animal sanctuary, and although the refuge is now closed to the public, they continue to happily live their lives at their forever home. Wallaby food is included in the rate – bound to help you make friends with them.
A cosy spot for couples, the horsebox is kitted out with a double bed, a kettle, a fridge and a welcome hamper (including all you need for a Cornish cream tea). There’s a separate shower room (of which you have exclusive use) and an outdoor kitchen for those who wish to prepare their own meals. Those who would rather eat out can head to Tywardreath, 20 minutes' walk away, for an excellent pub lunch or to Par (also within walking distance) and St Blazey (five minutes' drive) for fish and chips, a Chinese takeaway or pub fare.
In addition to scenic countryside walks – including wooded waterside trails at Tywardreath Marsh Nature Reserve (five minutes) – you’re tantalisingly close to the South West Coast Path, which you can access directly from Par… provided you don’t get lured by the golden sands of Par Beach and decide to take it easy, just relaxing and swimming in sheltered St Austell Bay.
Staying at the horsebox also contributes to a good cause; profits go directly to the animals that call Wingz and Thingz home, covering things like their food and care.

With massive biomes recreating different habitats (including the Mediterranean and a tropical rainforest), the Eden Project (10 minutes’ drive) runs a lively programme of events – from art and photography exhibitions to live music concerts. There are also zipwire flights over the distinctive biomes, an aerial walkway and a colourful outdoor garden.
Check out the elegant tall ships at tiny but historic Charlestown Harbour, on the bay of Saint Austell (15 minutes), which dates back to the late 18th century. If you’re in luck, you might catch a period drama being filmed here; if not, you can still take in spectacular views of the Cornish coast.
The Lost Gardens of Heligan (half an hour) was an overgrown Victorian garden when it was rediscovered about 30 years ago. After meticulous restoration, it now houses an outdoor tropical jungle, areas of woodland and a kitchen garden.
