Camping field with far-reaching views

It’s all about the dramatic views at Parkhead Campsite, a spacious and peaceful Cumbrian site that’s off the beaten track yet well located for visits to the Lake District, North Pennines and Hadrian’s Wall. At this off-grid, pop-up site, facilities may be rudimentary – picnic tables and portable toilets – but any lack of creature comforts is forgotten in the face of spectacular views stretching from the Lake District and Eden Valley to Hartside Pass. You can park your vehicle next to your tent – and with no pre-determined pitches, the choice of where you set up is in your hands. As there’s no electricity, be prepared with torches for moving around after dark – and you’ll appreciate the sparkling displays in clear night skies all the more as there’s virtually no light pollution. Firepits can be hired on site, and you can buy logs as well – but please note that the pitching area doubles as a livestock field out of camping season, so fires on the ground are not allowed. Dogs are welcome to join you on your Cumbria adventure, and all the site owners ask is that you clean up after them. The classic Coast to Coast cycle route runs close to the camping field, and there are lots of walks right from the pitches. You can experience the hospitality of local pubs and pick up basics in the community store at Kirkoswald (five minutes’ drive), and there are outdoor swimming pools in Lazonby and Hunsonby (both 10 minutes).

喜欢 Flat well drained field with good stone walls. Portaloos were clean. Good water pressure to the tap.

Saw few buzzards and a kestrel. Loads of bats active at night.

不喜欢 The sign needs to be bigger.

Gates had been left open and the sheep had covered the site with droppings.

Good 2 miles to pub.

喜欢 Very quiet open space, with only one other camper. Great views and amazing night skies.

不喜欢 Bit hard to locate. Toilets were not good but luckily had our own facilities. Area had recent sheep shit, which meant you had to clear the area around our tent.

喜欢 Parkhead is absolutely unique. The views are completely stunning. It’s absolutely silent at night with the most beautiful sky. It has a tap. It has a loo. It has friendly sheep in the next field for comipany. Don’t expect any more facilities and you will be overjoyed with what you find. We loved it.

喜欢 The view is spectacular with lambs nearby. It’s an excellent choice for a one-night stay only if you want to visit the Lake District. NO facilities like showers or pot wash, but 2 toilets toi-toi and water tap provided :)

不喜欢 No waste bin apart from recycling only

喜欢 Lovely quiet, scenic location.
Nice walks not far from site and a couple of pubs a short drive or couple of mile walk away
Owner of the site very helpful giving local points of interest and information for things to do and regularly checking everything was ok

不喜欢 Not a dislike more of an observation as if the site was full to capacity I’m not sure one portaloo would be able to cope

喜欢 Hidden gem! Gorgeous views, tranquil site, close to local towns and not too far away from Ullswater! Lovely river nearby too where you can kayak/go white water rafting. Ollie was a great host, looked after everyone and was very responsive. The site had a toilet and a water tap that was drinkable. Ollie was also very accommodating towards our anxious dog. Brilliant stay, will be back!
