One look at the green riverside location at Brompton Caravan Park and it shouldn’t be hard to understand why this place is just as suitable for family outings as it is for a couple's getaway. On the banks of the pretty Swale river, this peaceful family-run North Yorkshire site is surrounded by scenic countryside for laidback strolls. Get your rods at the ready, too, as guests are very welcome to unwind by fishing on the banks of the Swale. The site is handily placed between Richmond and Brompton on Swale, two Yorkshire locations with characterful pubs and restaurants. Market towns, historic properties, waterfalls, museums and walking trails are all within a short drive of the site, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise once you spot that it’s only four miles from the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and around 20 miles from the North Pennines National Landscape. Which will you track down first: waterfalls or historic sites? For the former, Richmond Falls (10 minutes’ drive away) is one of the most popular walks in the Richmond area – only three miles long – or you could head to the three waterfalls at Aysgarth Falls (35 minutes’ drive away), a little way into the Yorkshire Dales. For historic sites, you only need to head to Richmond to browse the Green Howards Museum or catch a show at Georgian Theatre Royal, built in 1788. Raby Castle and Newby Hall are within a 35-minute drive of the site, the first with a 200-acre deer park and a 14th-century castle, and the second with a miniature steam train that’s sure to make the kids shout 'choo-choo'.

喜欢 Tidy cosy pod, with a nice selection of refreshments provided. I had a comfortable night, although a little warm.

不喜欢 The temperature control for the heating unit is being a locked panel and the cabin got a little too warm, despite the overnight frost. Bit of a trek to the toilet block.

喜欢 Lovely riverside view. Very level grass pitch with EHU and easy access to a water point. Modern spotless toilet and shower facilities. Kids loved the park and the open grass spaces to play. We also enjoyed a paddle on the shalllw river with the fishing nets. Small shop on site selling the basics.

不喜欢 Only complaint I’ve got is when we were leaving, we got our motorhome caught under the security barrier. There was not sufficient time to drive under it given that the exit is on a hill requiring the handbrake and park mode while we used the fob out of the window (from a motorhome it’s quite a stretch as the fob sensor is low down at car height…). By the time I’d started up and drove through, it was already starting to come back down and it caught the top of the motorhome. Maybe the timings need changing? (I’d also witnessed this happening to another van about 10 mins before so possibly a common occurrence …)

喜欢 Very friendly welcome to a wonderful site. Pitch was large and in a great position opposite the river Swale. Toilet/shower block was clean and tidy as were the other facilities. Lovely scenic short walk through Easby Abbey into Richmond.

There are museums for all tastes in North Yorkshire. The Bowes Museum (half an hour's drive) has a huge collection of art and sculptures, as well as intricate clothes and shoes from the 17th to 20th centuries. The French château-style building is easy on the eyes, making parkland strolls a particularly fine idea too. Make your way to Beamish - The Living Museum of the North (50 minutes) to see old electric trams, a pit village and other reconstructions from 1900s life in the north of England. York may be a little further away (an hour and five minutes), but it also has lots of attractions, including the popular Jorvik Viking Centre and the historic Shambles. Waterfalls like High Force Waterfall (55 minutes) and Cotter Force will make your camera roll extra pretty. If you'd also like to snap some pics of castles and country houses, try Bolton Castle (25 minutes), where Mary Queen of Scots was once imprisoned, or Harewood House (55 minutes).
