Old York Forest is a well-kept site on the edge of Yorkshire's Allerthorpe Common, a 22-acre stretch of woodland and all-round wildlife haven. As such, this spot is a prime pick for those looking to reconnect with nature and ramble through the lovely local countryside. There are also three lakes on site, one of which can be fished in if you fancy throwing some angling into the mix. Dogs are welcome here and have their own dedicated dog-walking area. Old York Forest is also bike-friendly; there's plenty of scope for cross-country and road cycling in the surrounding countryside, and there’s a bike washing area back on site where you can hose down any mud collected while pedalling. Children are welcome, but this is primarily a peaceful place to hiking and wildlife watching. Whether coming with or without pets and bikes, adventure seekers can make for Allerthorpe Lakeland Park (10 minutes' drive), a 53-acre watersports centre, while those curious about the ancient city of York need only travel 25 minutes down the road. Back on site, there's a recreation area with picnic spots for indulging in open-air meals. Self-catering here is simple, as there are two supermarkets in the nearby town of Pocklington (10 minutes); there are also pubs in town – and, for that matter, en route in Barmby Moor (five minutes) – if you fancy leaving the cooking to the pros. Please note that a small number of pitches are located at the back of the campsite, a short walk from the shower block.

喜欢 Well laid out pitches.
Lovely full contained shower rooms, which were kept very clean.
Very helpful owner, who popped over to check all was well.

不喜欢 Only two showers/toilets, so queuing would be a problem when busy.
Grass pitches were soggy, with mole hills and hook-ups not clear, but we got moved easily to a hardstanding pitch (Owner did explain she had closed for grass pitches at this time, even though could still be booked on Pitch-up).

喜欢 •Easy self check-in with security gate code provided by email.
• Quiet, peaceful site with plenty of wildlife.
• Toilets and showers were clean.
• Local info, books, DVDs, and games available in the washing-up area.
• Friendly owner came round to check everything was okay.
• lovely Woodland walk nearby.
• Fishing pond still usable (owner has plans to improve).

不喜欢 More observations than dislikes

• If pitched at number 38, you’ll need a very long extension cable (over 35m) for the electric.
• Toilets/showers could be improved with clear occupied signs to avoid confusion.
• Ponds are quite overgrown at the moment, though still usable and the owner has plans to improve.

The location is quite remote, which wasn’t ideal for us without our own transport in a motorhome. Taxis were costly, Uber unreliable, and walking to nearby village/town sketchy on main unlit road.

不喜欢 Toilet waste goes into a big tank that you unscrew a lid and see and smell everyone's waste. Everywhere else I have ever been has a hole in the floor or a toilet you put waste in. Bins are not clearly marked with general or recycling. Dog walking area full of thistles so my dog didn't walk there. No dog waste bins in dog walking area

Peaceful site while we were there. 3 nights from Thursday 07/08/225.

不喜欢 We had a lakeside pitch but you couldn’t see the water for the overgrown growth around it.
No proper recycling.
No Wi-Fi.

If you're here in the summer, you may also want to give York Maze (10 minutes) a spin – alongside the maze, there's thrice-daily pig racing to sweeten the deal. After rambunctious farmyard thrills a calmer green space might be in order. If that's the case, try Burnby Hall Gardens (10 minutes), a splendidly scenic expanse of landscaped grounds best known for its cracking collection of lilies (you can also buy fish food, throw a handful into the lake and marvel at the the bubbling and splashing that follows). Finally, no trip to Old York Forest would be complete without a trip to old York city (25 minutes) – check out the Jorvik Viking Centre's animatronic take on Viking Britain, stroll past the overhanging timber-clad houses of the Shambles or visit York's Chocolate Story, a museum that explores the city's long-standing connection to the sweet stuff.
