A Hidden Gem Among the Apple Trees
We had such a peaceful and picturesque stay at Gwatkin Red Cow Campsite. Nestled in an orchard, we were the only ones camping in our T4 van, which made it feel like a true escape. Surrounded by apple trees and the gentle sounds of nature, it was the perfect setting for a relaxing getaway.
Admittedly, we arrived a little unprepared (our own fault for not checking ahead), only to find the restaurant was closed. But the owner couldn’t have been more accommodating—he kindly made us up some delicious ham and cheese baguettes, along with a couple of bottles of the local cider, which my husband absolutely loved. The ham, we believe, was from their own farm and it was incredibly tasty—simple, fresh and full of flavour.
The facilities were clean and so thoughtfully done. The showers and toilets are creatively made from old pigsties, labeled “sows” for the ladies and “boars” for the gents—such a clever touch! Even the sink basins, crafted from barrels, added to the rustic charm and really tied in with the overall feel of the site.
A huge bonus was being right next to the cider mill. Getting to sample some of the local brews was a treat, and we even got chatting to one of the farmers who shared the exciting plans they have for the future of the site. It’s clear there’s a lot of love and vision going into this place.
We honestly can’t wait to return and see how it all evolves. A truly special spot—thank you for having us!
