Spend a day in Murcia (25 minutes’ drive), staring in awe at the elaborately ornate façade of the cathedral, or checking out the displays at the archaeological museum and the Real Casino de Murcia (not a casino, but a cultural centre with exhibits). The many green areas along the banks of the river Segura are top spots for a shaded walk. The historic city of Cartagena (50 minutes) has a wealth of Roman-era sights, including the excavated remains of the Molinete Roman Forum Museum, two ancient amphitheatres and the defensive Punic Wall. The area’s naval heritage, underwater archaeology and military history all take centre stage at various museums around the city. Head to the coast and visit the Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar (50 minutes), an area of wetlands and salt ponds inhabited by flamingoes, avocets and chameleons. Then there’s the beaches, of course, such as sandy Playa de la Torre Derribada and Playa de la Llana.
