Get a little taste of backpacker history with a stay at Selina Isla Mujeres, previously known as PocNa, the first ever hostel in Latin America. Right at the tip of this tiny island, 15 minutes by ferry across the Caribbean Sea from Cancun, it’s easy to see how the first visitors here might have felt like staying more than just a few nights… From your accommodation, it’s just a couple of minutes' walk to Playa Norte, the most famed of the island's shimmering white beaches. The bright turquoise water stays shallow a long way out from shore here, so it's something of a paradise for swimmers and snorkellers. When you’re ready to leave your sun lounger, much is on hand back at site. Grab a mezcal cocktail at the bar or fish tacos at the seafood restaurant, or take some quiet time in the library zone and coworking space. Catch a movie in the cinema room, join in with a group workshop in the outdoor playground or head to the pool for a freshwater dip. And if you’ve been drawn to the island for the legendary diving, the on-site IDC Scuba Instructor Certification Centre is the most convenient way to plunge in. You can tell a lot about a place from the preferred method of transport – and it’s so laidback on this island that everyone gets around by golf buggy. You can rent them – along with bikes and electric scooters – from reception. However you choose to tour the island, at only four miles from top to bottom it’s easy to explore and make it back to Selina Isla Mujeres in time for sundowners with live music in the bar.

Top of the off-island adventures list is a seasonal whale shark tour, including the chance to swim with these huge gentle creatures. For more marine encounters, learn all about endangered sea turtles at the Tortugranja Turtle Reserve (15 minutes’ drive).
