In summer, soar above the mountains via hang glider or paraglider, plunge down them on 350kms of mountain bike trails or make tracks on over 6000km of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence hiking paths. Europe’s biggest canyon, the mighty and gorge-ous Gorges du Verdon, one of the Grand Sites of France, is in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence too; if you can spare the euros, floating over it in a hot air balloon is one of the best holiday experiences you’ll have anywhere. (Oui, vraiment, and if you’re camping in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, be sure and take the camera around the Verdon Regional Natural Park too.)
