The region around the site is something of an undiscovered corner of Croatia, so it's great for hikers, bikers and nature lovers looking to explore the forested hills and fields. As it’s rich in wildlife, keep an eye out for deer, foxes and birds of prey. You might also enjoy canoeing and rafting adventures down rapids on the Mrežnica river (an hour’s drive). You can hike to the viewing deck over the spectacular cascade of waterfalls in UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park (an hour and a half), or see them from a boat trip on Kozjak Lake. For something a bit more high-octane, you can also see the park from above on the zipwire at Zipline Pazi Medo. History buffs could head first to Ribnik Fortress (10 minutes), a medieval stronghold open for visits to its keep, courtyard and chapel. Other stops on a heritage tour may be the impressive baroque-style Ozalj Castle (25 minutes) and gardens standing over the Kupa river, or the Renaissance and baroque buildings of Karlovac (half an hour), on the confluence of four rivers and centred around a star-shaped fortress.
