The city of Heerlen’s a 10-minute drive from this site and it’s no exaggeration to say it probably does have something for everyone. Slide over to SnowWorld Landgraaf for the indoor ski slope, ride to Kinderstad Heerlen for the kids’ rollercoasters, or see the animals roar at Mondo Verde zoo (all within 15 minutes). For adult activities to suit historical aficionados, the Thermenmuseum is the place to roam around the ruins of Roman bathhouses, and Hoensbroek Castle – one of the biggest in the Netherlands – puts on tours of this moated 13th-century structure (both are 10 minutes away from the site). Kids might be swayed into coming along on a trip to the castle when they find out about the medieval fancy dress options… or you could just drop them off at the skatepark in Heerlen while you explore without any risk of moaning and groaning.
