The clue's in the title at Panoramic Pods: these luxury glamping units are on a quiet hillside, each with a woodburning hot tub overlooking top-notch views of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Find bliss in the bubbles, then get acquainted with the animals during ambles around this 40-acre farm site five minutes' drive from Allendale; there are pigs, chickens and ducks that need feeding if you fancy lending a hand. Once the livestock’s been catered to, turn your attention to your own meals. The kitchen in each pod has a microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster, hot plate, crockery and cutlery for prepping meals, plus there’s electric heating and a woodburning stove for extra toastiness and the ensuite bathroom has a shower and heated towel rail. As for sleeping arrangements, dive into the double bed or sprawl out on the pull-out sofa with its double mattress, then switch on the TV to keep up to date with your fave shows. Outside, there’s a private terrace with seating and twinkly fairy lights – fab for alfresco eats – as well as that aforementioned hot tub. Cars are parked a short walk from the pods to keep things nice and quiet, so make the most of peaceful evenings by spending them outdoors. The dark sky status here in this part of Northumberland means you’re in for some pretty views at night as well as during the day.

If your waterlogged skin needs a break from the woodfired hot tub, head off to Hexham Abbey (20 minutes’ drive) for a wander around this Grade I-listed place of worship. As well as being easy on the eye, the 12th-century structure, built on a landmark first created way back in AD 674, is also rather historical. Hadrian's Wall (25 minutes), masterminded by the Romans in AD 122, is even older. Set off on extensive ambles alongside this former defensive fortification – it stretches for almost 80 miles from one side of the English coast to the other. Learn about a different part of Northumberland’s past at the Killhope Lead Mine Museum (20 minutes), or school yourself on all things natural at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre (25 minutes). If you’d rather just lose yourself in the lush landscapes, Talkin Tarn country park (40 minutes) and its cracking kettle-hole lake is one of the top places to do it.
