If you're after something a bit different down Durham way, you'll find it in spades at The Barn at Easington. Part of an outdoor educational centre that doubles as a venue for music, drama, arts and family events, this fab little place is designed for outdoorsy holidays with as much – or as little – luxury as you want, all in a easygoing setting with the emphasis on serenely simple stuff, from sitting round the campfire to roaming about the meadows and woods. The Barn is within a 30-acre farm on the coast of the Durham Magnesian Limestone Plateau, in an Area of Outstanding Beauty on the edge of Hawthorn Dene. The site is at the end of a mile-long track, which the site does their best to maintain. It's also a couple of miles from local village Easington and four from Peterlee, and a short and scenic walk across fields and through the dene to Hawthorn Hive's small beach and the Durham Heritage Coast; when it's stormy, you'll be able to hear the sea from the site. Wherever you're staying on site, you're welcome to wander around the fields – look out for the farm chickens, horses and (sometimes) pigs – or you can opt to idle around the farm in your own secret spot, or trundle along to see if any events are on during your stay. Then time to get cooking: barbecues and campfires are enthusiastically encouraged, and firepits and firewood are available on request. For eating out and other supplies, although you'll feel you're in the middle of nowhere here, you're really rather well placed indeed: the A19 is 10 minutes' drive away; Seaham is within 15 minutes' drive or about 45 minutes' walk, and Durham is reachable in half an hour. Newcastle is 40 minutes from the farm.

If you want to pick up such items please take them home with you.

Gostou: Beautiful situation, wild-flower meadows stunning in early summer, the site is quiet and very well-maintained but also has a natural feel; facilities extremely clean and well looked-after; very friendly and helpful hosts; pod (sparrow) in a secluded spot with great views over meadows to the sea. Track is also well-maintained and easily navigable in a normal car.

Gostou: In The Barn we have found a place were we can throw off the shackles of real life and enjoy it.
This is our Fathers Day tradition. Myself and my son (10 years old) walk from Crimdon to To The Barn which is around 8.6 mile. It's a tough trek along the coast but just as beautiful as it is hard especially in the heat we had 🥵.
On arrival the gears change and we were able to relax. Amongst the activities we enjoyed were playing Block, King Domino, we ventured through the woods back to the pebble beach were we built Rock House and were delighted when we trekked down again on the Sunday to see that others had added to it 🙏🏼.
My son enjoyed preparing a few meals, we used washing up as a chance to chat. It was great to see him be a kid again without the anchor of the distractions he and I have at home.
Our camping when we come here is basic, a small 2 man tent is all we need and we used the barn as a shelter when the rain came. It was perfect for cards and games and there is a kettle too so a cuppa was on hand whenever we wanted one.

Another perfect weekend with differing weather's to deal with. We both can't wait to revisit. It's a perfect piece of paradise that never fails to make you feel relaxed and alive. We both love it here so much!

Pitches are far enough apart to feel like you are wild camping.

Absolutely loved the fire pits.

Shed showers are novel.

Having a stepping stool next to urinals for children to use was a great idea.

30 min walk to blast beach. 3 hours walk to Seaham beach (walking at a 4 year old pace).

I've already booked to come back again in 7 weeks.

Gostou: Me and my daughter attended and she had a great time running around playing with the other kids on sight, a safe place for children to run around and enjoy themselves and it had everything we need.
I enjoyed relaxing with the firepit provided.

Não gostou: The weather, but that's hardly the owners fault ha ha

Gostou: The host was lovely and very accommodating. Amenities are great and everything is clean. There’s showers, toilets and there’s an inside communal area - they really have everything. Short walk to the beach with was lovely. Would highly recommend.

Gostou: Enjoyed our stay here, beautiful walk to the beach, hidden gem, peaceful, lots of bird life . The owners very friendly and helpful, toilet and showers lovely and clean (I often don’t use site facilities if not clean but not here they were great ) Thanks for our lovely stay we stayed in our campervan with my husband, adult Down’s syndrome son who also enjoy walk with us .

Gostou: Lovely location and probably the most tranquil and peaceful place I've stayed at for a long time.

Owner very friendly and helpful and facilities were clean. The daffs were a nice touch!

Will definitely be aiming to return again.

Heritage is all around here: local village Easington is home to an ancient church famed as a sailor's landmark, and is a former mining town with colliery remnants including a pit cage and pit wheel monuments at the nature reserve on the old pit site. More old mining bits and bobs can be picked up on the local beaches, including sea coal and sea glass. Walk through the woods and along the coastal path to the seaside town of Seaham, its beaches and harbour; the area around the farm is a wildlife haven too, so the quiet of foot might see deer and badger setts along the way. Like most the beaches along this stretch of Durham coast, those at Seaham are popular for sea fishing, particularly from the Featherbed rocks to Ryhope Dene. Hartlepool (25 minutes) has the HMS Trincomalee and the Maritime Experience on its quayside; at Durham, meander along the river for viewsome looks at the spectacular cathedral and castle.
