There are occasional festivals and weekend concerts during the summer months too. The camping field is neatly mown and sheltered by trees; picnic tables are scattered around the pitches so you can eat alfresco in comfort – spark up a barbecue or bring in a takeaway from Sawbridgeworth (10 minutes’ drive). Modern facilities – including a toilet block and heated outdoor showers – make staying this close to nature effortless for one and all, and thanks to quick links to London (40 minutes by train from Sawbridgeworth) and London Stansted Airport (20 minutes’ drive), this spot makes a handy overnight stopover as part of your longer journey.

Gostou This was our first ever camping holiday for me and my girls. All the staff were really friendly and accommodating. They made us feel so welcome and we loved every minute of our time there that we can’t wait to come back!

Não gostou The factory can be heard at night because the camp site is so quiet. But it’s not off putting and if anything the white noise helps with sleeping.

I adore everything about this place—the vibe, the people, the location. It’s just far enough from home to feel like a real escape, without the need to drive 100+ miles. Most of that magic comes from the laid-back, chilled atmosphere that hits you the moment you arrive.

This is truly back-to-nature camping with a wonderful, small-festival feel. If you’re into music, laughter, and waving your hands in the air like you just don’t care (bucket hat optional!), you’ll feel right at home. And when the night winds down, you can wake up to yoga and wellbeing sessions in the morning—perfect balance.

Gostou We had the most wonderful time at The Wild Retreat! I came with my two daughters and from morning till night there were so many well-organised activities to enjoy. The lakeside beach was clean, safe, and perfect for swimming and relaxing. We also loved exploring, joining in the concerts, and the amazing fire performance in the evening – it was absolutely mesmerising to watch the performer spinning and creating such beautiful effects with flames. Every moment felt special.

What stood out most was the warm and friendly atmosphere. The staff and other guests were cheerful, supportive, and always ready to help, which made our stay even more enjoyable. My daughters had a fantastic time, and I felt completely at ease knowing they were having fun in such a positive environment.

A beautiful place full of energy, laughter, and memories – we can’t wait to return! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique retreat with family-friendly vibes.

There’s plenty going on off-site around here too; if you’d like to keep active, there’s a golf course within 10 minutes by car, and the River Lee Country Park (20 minutes’ drive) offers lots of waterside walks and a sculpture trail to follow through the greenery. If that’s too low key, sporty families can compete against each other at TeamSport Go Karting Harlow (10 minutes). Quieter days out with young kids might involve a train ride through woodland on the Audley End Miniature Railway (40 minutes); there’s also a fairy walk encompassing unicorns and tiny grottoes in the grounds. Turning to cultural days out, the colleges and exceptional museums of Cambridge are 45 minutes’ drive away. You can also potter around Moore’s former workrooms at the Henry Moore Studios & Gardens (20 minutes) – the latter are liberally scattered with his fluid, rounded masterpieces. There’s more avant-garde sculpture to be seen at the 14-acre Gibberd Garden (15 minutes) as well as beech avenues and water features.
