What’s your party’s seaside style – stretched out to sunbathe on the sand, or up and about poking about for interesting critters in rockpools? It’s not an either/or situation at Sicily’s Camping Di Vita Vera, for this family-friendly site is handily located between the both on Punta Religione.
Stroll out in one direction from here and you’re faced with a vista of sandy beach and dunes that stretches off into the distance for around a kilometre (all the way to the nearest resort, Marina di Modica, in fact, making for a rather fab trot into town). Turn the opposite way and it’s more of a craggy coastline – the sort of area fish life favours for hanging around in. Submerge with a snorkel here and you may well see all sorts of sea creatures below the surface, including seahorses if you’re lucky.
In between, you'll be staying in a peaceful place with heaps of space and plenty of shade to be had under the tamarisk trees. Private bathrooms for each pitch means no need to queue for the shower or loo, and there’s drinkable water for hassle-free thirst quenching. If you’re doing DIY eats, you’re welcome to light up a barbecue; if you’d prefer to eat out there’s plenty of choice 20 minutes’ walk away in Marina di Modica (along with shops for those who need to stock up on supplies).

There’s a selection of super sandy beaches to while away your time on along this southern part of Sicily’s coastline – should you tire of the beach right by your site, you can set your sights instead on Sampieri (10 minutes’ drive away), Pozzallo (15 minutes) or the lengthy stretch 25 minutes away at Donnalucata (a splendid spot for surfing and windsurfing if there’s a breeze).
If you like to combine chilling out with a bit of poking around historic sites, you’ve come to the right place – take your pick from baroque churches in Scicli, the troglodyte village at Cava d’Ispica (both about half an hour away) and the historic centre of Ragusa, 40 minutes away.
A little further afield at an hour’s drive, Syracuse is well worth the trip to see the Neapolis archaeological park, Greek theatre and museums. Should the bambini be looking less than enthused at the prospect of ancient wanderings, aim instead for Modica, half an hour away, where the historic centre is home to a cluster of excellent chocolate shops.
