Such stunning scenery… and such a range of ways to get out and see some of it. Rural Mato Grosso site Camping Estância da Mata, 25 minutes’ drive from Estivado, is in a most handy spot for trips to the area’s top sights, and runs excursions to help guests get to the best bits. Most visitors to this part of the world come to see its stunning limestone scenery, its waterfalls and the clear waters of its rivers. And it's very easy to get going on that sightseeing here – there’s a swimming area in the river just next to the site, and that’s also a launch point for float rides to get a bit deeper into the woodland surrounds. Or you might elect to take a close-up view of the canopy by climbing up to the treetop trails at the site’s adventure park (for an extra charge). Once you’ve sampled the immediate surrounds, the site’s sister agency is on hand to help guests sign up for tours and buy vouchers for some of the area’s most scenic spots: the Enchanted Aquarium, Serra Azul waterfall, Araras Lagoon and Quebó caves are all within easy reach for swims, walks and snorkel trips. All such activities can be powered up with a good breakfast at the site’s restaurant, and any remnants of forest/river washed away at the end of the day at the showers in the amenities block. Any spectacular pics you’ve snapped along the way (there are bound to be at least a few…) can be shared with the outside world using the wifi connection.

Swimming cossies and comfy shoes are essential bits of kit for a stay here. Self-guided outings and organised excursions can both take you out to corners with enticing names like the Enchanted Kingdom (15 minutes’ drive) for wildlife-spotting walks and river floats, or the Enchanted Aquarium (20 minutes), to snorkel in clear waters full of fish. There’s more swimming to be had at Mirante Do Cerrado (20 minutes), a forest park with waterslides, pools and ziplines to zoom along, and the family-friendly waters of Balneário Estivado (half an hour). A little time away from the water is advisable occasionally (lest you get permanently wrinkly fingertips) – the caves around Akaia (25 minutes) are a good bet for a bit of drying time, or perhaps a walk by Araras Lagoon (25 minutes) if you simply can’t bear to lose sight of the water.
