Why not disconnect from the modern world and its trappings for a while? Why not spend your holiday deep in the Australian bush? Why not indeed…? If you’re up for all that and don’t mind roughing it a bit, then Whynot might just be the place for you. This site – on a farm a five-minute drive from the village of Nerriga, in the south-eastern reaches of New South Wales – is a wonderful spot for a quiet retreat. There’s not much to disturb your peace at this 40-acre property surrounded by vegetation-covered hills – just the occasional kookaburra laughing from the treetops, or a kangaroo hopping past.
Now, about that ‘if you don’t mind roughing it a bit’… There are no facilities on site and no drinkable or running water either. That means you’ll need to be self-sufficient, so stock up on drinking water and other essentials in the township of Braidwood (35 minutes’ drive), and make sure you have your own camping toilet. Needless to say, you’ll be expected to leave no trace. Campfires are permitted, and there's plenty of firewood available. And while you’re prepping the barbecue, don’t forget to look up and take in the spectacular sunset.
When it’s time to stretch your legs, you can head to Morton National Park (45 minutes) for a hike up to McKenzies Lookout or to Belmore Falls, where forested trails come with splendid views over Kangaroo Valley.

Lokale attraksjoner
During a visit to Bees Nest Nature Reserve (half an hour’s drive), on the Shoalhaven River, you might be lucky to spot an endangered koala up a tree. Other wildlife to keep an eye out for includes bandicoots and birds such as cockatoos and colourful parrots.
With its gorgeous sandy beaches facing Jervis Bay, Huskisson (an hour) is well worth the drive. In town, check out the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum & Gallery, with nautical equipment, historic artefacts and a boardwalk snaking among the mangroves to Currambene Creek.
Australia’s capital Canberra (an hour and a half) spreads out from Parliament House, a modern building set within a circular area of parkland. From there, cross the Molonglo River to reach the National Museum of Australia, with displays illustrating the history of the country, and the imposing Australian War Memorial, at the foot of Mount Ainslie.
