Within easy reach of the world-renowned Galician pilgrimage site at Santiago de Compostela, As Cabañas do Río Pego is a leafy and luxurious holiday park in Vilanova, bordered by the Pego River and 20 minutes’ drive from the Muros y Noya river estuary. The modern accommodation comprises a handful of wooden cabins (one with disabled access). All have two bedrooms, a ‘proper’ bathroom with shower, a stylish kitchen area and open-plan living space.
The cabins are fronted by private decking and each has its own parking space surrounded by landscaped gardens. They’re filled with a myriad of flowers, trees and shrubs, with a collection of more than 60 varieties of camellia taking centre stage among the burbling of streams and the sound of birdsong.
With their rural setting in the municipality of Brión, the cabins are also a springboard to the scenic Val da Amaía river valley, which you can also explore on horseback (20 minutes’ drive). There are shops, supermarkets and restaurants in lively Bertamiráns (10 minutes), from where you can take the bus to Santiago de Compostela.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden
Walkers and cyclists will be keen to get out onto the riverside trails in the Val da Amaía directly from the cabins; you can hike through woodland to the ancient hill fort at Castro lupario (an hour and 20 minutes’ walk), follow the course of the Sar River (20 minutes) or cycle up to the historic hill village of San Xulián de Bastavales (10 minutes by bike) for views over the valley.
There’s lots for history buffs to see as well; have a wander around the battlements – all that’s left of the 13th-century castle – at Torres de Altamira (10 minutes’ drive), have a quiet moment in the chapel at the Santuario de Santa Minia (five minutes) or tour the ruins of Pazo do Casal (10 minutes), a typically Galician manor house currently under restoration.
Taste Galician cuisine in the formal gardens at historic Pazo Vista Alegre (half an hour), or in the bars of Santiago de Compostela’s old town (20 minutes). When you’re done grazing on tapas and fresh seafood, take in the decorative interior of the famed cathedral, where you can often see pilgrims giving thanks at the end of their personal ‘camino’.
