Whether you’re holidaying as a couple, as a family, with your dog or solo, if you’re after a beach break, Camping Costa Dorada might just be the place for you. This peaceful spot on the outskirts of the Catalonian resort of Canet de Mar (and a 45-minute drive north-east of Barcelona) is less than half a kilometre (or a five-minute walk) from a long, wide stretch of golden sand lapped by the waters of the Balearic Sea. A boating club right on the beach has sailing courses, taster sessions and paddleboard rentals, so that should take care of your watersports needs. Accommodation is in spacious safari tents with two bedrooms (one double and the other with bunk beds), a well-equipped kitchen and a modern bathroom (with shower). Then there’s the living spaces – both indoors (a bright dining area with air conditioning) and outdoors, on a shaded decked terrace with a picnic table and soft seating for after-dinner relaxing… or for preparing your itinerary for the following day. Some might like to stay close to home and make the most of the site’s facilities (a pool and a playground, plus a bar), while others might wish to explore the local area, whether with long walks or bike rides along the Costa del Maresme or through Canet de Mar, which has a fair number of buildings designed by Modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Head inland to Castell de Santa Florentina (10 minutes’ drive), an imposing 11th-century fortress whose turrets and crenellated walls seem to rise right out of the forest. In the early 1900s, the castle was renovated by Domènech i Montaner, while in the 2010s it served as a setting for the TV series ‘Game of Thrones’. In Lloret de Mar (half an hour), check out sandy beaches like Playa de Fenals and secluded coves like Sa Caleta Lloret and rocky Cala Banys (the latter is a popular spot for snorkelling). There are spectacular sea views from Castell de Sant Joan, built in the 11th century and partially destroyed by the British Army in 1805. In Barcelona (45 minutes, though it might be less stressful to catch a train, since there is a direct connection to the station of Barcelona-Sants), you can continue your Modernist education by visiting Domènech i Montaner’s exquisite Palau de la Música Catalana complex and Antoni Gaudí’s still-unfinished Basílica de la Sagrada Família.
