Craving some silence, scenery and stunning starry skies? Equilibrio Farm is the place to find all of those, in a gorgeous location just under a kilometre from the small town of Torrão. This off-grid Alentejo site is part of a peaceful farm owned by an Austrian family who are keen to welcome guests to share their gorgeous part of the world for a while. You’ll be sharing the place with a fair bit of wildlife too – particularly birds like storks, herons, black kites and cormorants, all of which congregate around the lake. The main agricultural activity at the farm is olive oil production, and you’ll be pitching up among around 350 olive trees, including one that’s thought to be 800 years old. You may of course also like to buy some of the farm’s oil while you’re here… To keep your visit as natural as possible, the facilities here are fairly simple in style, but you’ll have access to water, a couple of warm showers and a compost toilet, and you’ll be able to put up your awning or gazebo for a bit of shelter from the weather. It all makes a very peaceful spot in which to listen to the sounds of nature and gaze up at the sparkling night sky. And while the atmosphere is definitely one of rural peace, it’s handy that the town is only about 10 minutes’ walk away for shops and places to eat.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

You may like to get out and explore the area on foot – there are some good hiking trails nearby, including a couple that take you to viewpoints overlooking Albufeira de Vale de Gaio (the lake you can spot from the farm). Have a little stroll around Torrão as well, to see its churches and historic fountains before a dip in the open-air pool. If you’d like to see more of the area’s architecture, perhaps head to Viana do Alentejo (25 minutes’ drive) to see its castle and travel a little way out of town to visit Santuário de Nossa Senhora d’Aires. The gorgeous Capela das Conchas (10 minutes) is worth seeing too, for its intricate design of shells and stones. For other days out nearby, spend some time in Evora (40 minutes), visiting its cathedral, Roman temple and Chapel of Bones, or seek out local wineries to sample some of the tipples the Alentejo area has become known for.
