Got something to celebrate? Perhaps a birthday, an anniversary… or just the fact that you’ve managed to leave work behind for a couple of days? Any excuse is good enough for a gorgeous glamping stay at Ecolieu B & Bubble, just outside the Nord-Pas-de-Calais village of Drincham. This site is not just a place to stay – it’s a full experience, combining luxurious accommodation and gourmet meals into one easy package. Each glamping unit has its own coffee machine so you can make a hot drink whenever you like, but essentially that’s the only thing you’ll have to do for yourselves. Everything else is sorted for you here, with beds made up, and both dinner (a platter of local charcuterie and cheese) and breakfast provided. That leaves you free to relax, put your feet up and simply spend some quality time watching the light change as the sun sets (or rises, if you’re up in time). Each of the units has its own private bathroom, comfy furnishings and heating to keep things cosy, and there’s outdoor furniture provided for your alfresco time too. What might you get up to when you’re not sampling gourmet snacks on site? Well, there are several options within a half-hour drive, including days on the beach in Malo-les-Bains or trips to places like Esquelbecq, Cassel and Bergues (all members of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France).

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

Heading up to the coast may well mean you’re heading for a day on the beach at Malo-les-Bains (half an hour’s drive), strolling on the soft sand, trying out various watersports or simply admiring the pretty Belle Époque villas along the seafront. Some time here is easily combined with a detour to Dunkirk (25 minutes), which has a maritime museum, an aquarium and the LAAC contemporary art museum as well as several places where you can learn more about the role the town played in World War II. Turning inland, there are several attractive villages nearby where you can see traditional Flemish architecture and other historic sights – for starters, Esquelbecq (15 minutes) has a castle and a war memorial, and Bergues (20 minutes) has a bell tower where it’s worth climbing the 206 steps for fabulous views over the surrounding area. Back at ground level, there are scenic boat trips from Saint-Omer (25 minutes) and the area’s activity providers can sort either Segway rides or tours in a classic 2CV.
