If you’re in search of a properly peaceful place to pitch up, this one should suit you rather well… getting to Domaine de Calabel involves travelling to the end of a dead-end rural road, so there should be very little traffic noise to disturb your siestas and slumbers here. This quiet Gers location near the tiny village of Pouylebon is also well away from any light pollution, so guests can expect some fabulous stargazing on clear nights. And while it is indeed quiet, it’s not entirely silent – thanks to the birdsong you’re likely to hear in the mornings and the happy chatter of the hens that live on site. Hens on site of course means fresh eggs for breakfast – and kids are welcome to go along and help with that, or lend a hand with feeding time. There’s also space for them to ride bikes, play games (badminton, mölkky, cards and puzzles) or have a go at archery and pétanque. Hammocks are hung in the trees for comfy siestas, or you may choose to stretch out by the swimming pool so you can have a little dip to cool off when you get too warm. All that’s missing from this picture now is a drink and a bite to eat, you say? Well, those are on hand too – the site has a snack bar where you can pick up aperitifs, ice creams and various snacks, and you can also order meal baskets made up of local produce for an easy dinner back at your pitch. It’s also possible to book breakfast deliveries of bread and pastries.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden

This is a particularly pretty area to have a walk or bike ride around, and there are several lovely trails to try out nearby. Long-distance walkers may also like to note that the St James Way (the pilgrims’ route to Santiago de Compostela) is only about 10 minutes’ walk away, making this a handy place to stop off for a night or two en route. For other outdoor activities, you may like to take the kids along to Ludina Waterpark (15 minutes’ drive), which has waterslides, a waterfall and paddling pools as well as a couple of large outdoor pools, a playground and beach areas. There’s a swimming area and horse riding over at Lac Lupiac (25 minutes), or you could try the treetop courses of Green in the Air adventure park (half an hour). There are plenty of historic attractions around too – take a tour of Château de Bassoues (15 minutes), visit the Musée d'Artagnan de Lupiac (25 minutes) and stroll around the villages of L'isle de Noé (15 minutes) and Fourcès (50 minutes).
