A peaceful riverside location that’s got easy access to both a lively beach resort and a historic town? You’ll have lots of boxes ticked on the wishlist when you stay at Camping La Pépinière.
This spacious and friendly family-run site sits in an enviable spot on the banks of the Hérault river between the seaside village of Grau d’Agde and the bigger town of Agde, known as the ‘Black Pearl of the Mediterranean’ for its striking black basalt buildings. That nifty location means you can take a riverside walk, cycle along a bike path to Grau d’Agde in a few minutes to its beach and shops, or head into town to wander through the cobbled streets and visit the museums.
Beach days, cycling trails, wine tasting, birdwatching, watersports and family fun parks can all be on the schedule here – but so too can chilled-out days spent on site, perhaps taking a dip in the swimming pool (which also has a paddling pool for the younger guests), playing a game of pétanque or just relaxing in the shade of the palm and laurel trees that are dotted all around the site.
There should be plenty to keep the kids busy here, with a playground, a trampoline and a multisports court available, and extra activities laid on for them in the summer months. You’ll also have access to a snack bar that provides not only easy eats and drinks but also the chance to watch sports on the giant TV screen or play games of pool and table football.

Lokale bezienswaardigheden
The beach in Grau d’Agde (about five minutes away by bike/25 minutes on foot) is a lovely sandy stretch with plenty of space for games, paddling and sandcastles. While you’re in the village, take a look at the market, which is particularly known for its fish, fruit and local crafts.
Without straying too far you could also wander through the historic centre of Agde (five minutes' drive), visit the art-filled Château Laurens (10 minutes) or go birdwatching in the Bagnas Nature Reserve (10 minutes). There are also numerous coastal and riverside bike routes, and plenty of watersports (including diving, snorkelling, paddleboarding and jetskiing) in buzzy Cap d’Agde (10 minutes).
For family days out, head to the thrill rides of Fabrikus World or the waterslides and wave pools of Aqualand Cap D'Agde (both 10 minutes). If you’re sans kids, perhaps hit up some of the vineyards around the Étang de Thau (15 minutes) or spend some time wandering around Béziers (half an hour), one of the oldest settlements in France and packed with historic interest.
